View Full Version : Which wireless providers work out in Glamis ???
I have Verizon who I love for coverage and reception but they are failing me out at Glamis. No service on my Smasung I600 and I think its coverage related rather than phone (yeah I know ... call Verizon ... like any of them people know anyhting and they always want you to buy more/different). I know AT&T works out there but not sure if it is on their CDMA(?) or TDMA (?) plan and/or phone related. Anyone else speak up if theirs does/doesnt work ??? Does AT&T also work in south dunes (I dont know if my Verizon does or not as havent been down their yet).

I have verison too and it wont work in the washes.. has full signal in random places in the dunes and sometimes at gecko road... works fin in the south side of the dunes(buttercup gordons etc)
Cingular works as well. T-Mobil works too but they are using Cingulars satillite which means you'll be roaming.
alltel works fine for me....

I switched to Cingular and there signal/phone reception was just not up to my standards in Phoenix areas. Had lots of static all the time, couldnt get signal at airport in some tough spots that Verizon can, weird things with phones, etc ... same occurred on two totally different phones. Cancelled before even going to Glamis unfortunetly.
So, thought I would try Sprint. It has nice and crisp sound here in various Phoenix areas I go to although not as good as Verizon once you get up into some of the foothills (Estrella Mountains for me). Tried it at the dunes and zero signal on two totally different phones even with their analog roaming and analog capable phone and coverage map claiming they do offer signal in that area.
My conclusion so far is most phones work find in the the south dunes (Yuma) and Gecko Road west side up in Glamis. Only Cingular/AT&T and perhaps Alltel and T-Mobile work in the camp areas/washes in Glamis on East side.
I should have just stuck with Verizon and considered a pay per use Alltel or T-Mobile phone (Cingular doesnt have a real pay per use plan) for the dunes (all though I havent tested those either). Wasted a bunch of activation fees and am convinced Verizon is the best overall that I have tried for non-dune use.

The biggest probelm with Verizon is they constantly upgrade. Bring your phone in to a store and have them uprade your phones software for free..
I've had great luck with T-Mobile out there! Full Service at Glamis...

AT&T aka Cingular, worked better there than in the valley for me.

Sprint works all over the South Dunes (Buttercup, Gordens), but is sketchy in the washes From wash 6 on back. I get strong signal everywhere else in the dunes.
Good news for this season ... did my first Glamis trip and was shocked when my new Sprint phone got a signal. I had a strong digital roaming signal with very clear reception from wash #3. Unfortunetly, I didnt expect it to work so I left the charger at home and my car charger was broke so it didnt do much good this time out. I actually had on my to-do list to go buy a pre-paid phone for Glamis only so I also kinda luck'd out I didnt get around to doing this and for some strange reason actually tried my phone.
It gets even better ... my friend had a Verizon phone and was also getting a signal in the washes.
Looks like more are now roaming off the AT&T/Cingular tower that has been there. This should mean Cingular/AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and possibly Nextel (since in bed with Sprint now ?) should get service on both wash and gecko sides of the dunes ... in other words, anywhere in the Glamis dunes unless something else has changed ... actually i think south dunes around Yuma have been covered so its looking good now for cell phone users and piece of mind in genral when playing around in the dunes.
Now if they would just cover the road from I-10 to Glamis ... yeah know thats where I am going to get a flat and not have comm [:0]...

I have Verizon as well. Works all over, and if I find a spot a little dead, I switch to analog and can always get out
When buying a phone you should check if you have analog roaming or if your provider still has analog roaming. I beleive most newer phones are going all digital so you might not have a choice. It was good to see digital roaming for me in the dunes as mine is digital only.
My Cingular works fine all over GW buggy flats and up to highway/competition hill. Out in the dunes I need to get out of the really deep sided bowls, but it works fine on large bowl bottoms with sloping sides, peaks and ridges.
