I know whips are required on quads at the dunes, but my wife was told by someone that whips may be required on all trucks at the dunes also now. Is this true?

Any vehicle of any kind ridden out INTO the dunes are required to have a whip flag. You see people getting ticketed all the time at the sand drags because of this rule.

I might be mistaken, but I been told you must have a whip on your vehicle if you are anymore than like 50 feet or 100 feet?? Anyone know if this is true or not?

This is pasted right out of the regulations. I guess that if you follow the regulations to the letter you should have a flag as soon as you enter the recreation area but I have only seen it enforced out in the dunes itself.

SAFETY FLAGS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES IN THE IMPERIAL SAND DUNES RECREATION AREA (This includes two-wheeled motorcycles.) All vehicles shall be equipped with a whip mast and a 6x12 inch red/orange flag. Flags may be of pennant, triangle, square, or rectangular shape. Masts must be securely mounted on the vehicle and extend 8 feet from the ground to the mast tip. Safety flags must be attached within 10 inches of the tip of the whip mast with club or other flags mounted below safety flag or on another whip.

I would say this, after you set up camp and unload your TB or trailer and begine to drive anywhere around camp or in the Dunes in your vehicle, mount a flag to it. It's not worth the risk of getting a ticket by not having a flag mounted somewhere on your vehicle. They have been enforcing the rules strickly this year compared to last IMO. Also make sure you mount your pass to your rearview mirror. You don't want to give the BLM any reason to pull you over.

Even though the requirements state orange or red flags on the whips I think they are just happen to have the people install whips with flags period. Obvioulsy you see every type and color.

I would agree with Griz and Silver400ex but don't give the BLM /Sheriff's Dept. any reason to ticket you and you'll be fine with any color flag on. I've seen them all and as long as you obide by the rules they'll leave you alone. Don't drink and drive, no glass bottles, seat belt and whatever else you might think of.

True They have been doing sobriety test at the entrance of comp hill at buttercup. They are stopping you no matter what you are riding or driving. They are really cracking down this year. Be safe!
