So how did every one do? Myself & 1 other rider battled for the holeshot in the 600 class. We were side by side through the first left 90 degeree turn & headed for the first jump. I hit it too fast wide open in 4th gear, hit front wheel first on the 2nd whoop. Endoed over the handlebars. Bent my shifter & twicked levers & bark busters. I had to get things strighten out, by this time the 700 class was let go & I was past by all. I picked up the pace, & some how managed to come back for a 3rd place finish. I'm pretty sore this morning. Swollon knees, bruises on my ass & above my knees, sore back & thumb. My foot is bruised. All in all a fun race. I should lead 40+ points divison by a point or two. So what every's story?

Phil,
A friend of mine was out watching the race and he told me your nice little crash off the start looked pretty brutal. He said that when you went over the bars the first thing that hit the ground was your head. He said he couldn't believe you got up and kept riding. Nice job on your third. I too got a third place. Only five in the Open Pro class so I didn't get any money or trophy. I was kinda torqued, but that's how they like to play their little game. Third overall and not even my name mentioned, oh well.
I got my usual bad start, so I had to come from the back of the pack again. They started the Open Pros, Senior Pros and Master Pros all together so I had quite a few riders to go around. I passed about 8-10 people on the first lap and got myself up into 3rd by the second lap or so but Kyle Beshaw (1st) and Dayton Raper (2nd) had already pretty much checked out. They were battling pretty hard. I actually caught up to Raper mid race right after he pitted but I crashed in the infield AND pitted on the next lap so he got up ahead of me a ways. I thought the longer race (2 hour, 30 lap) would play into my advantage, but Kyle never faded. The track wasn't rough enough, and he was riding that 500 like a maniac. I was pushing pretty hard at the end trying to get into their dust, but it wasn't meant to be I guess. Ben Hutchinson pulled in right behind me so I assume he finished 4th. He had a good ride also. It was a tough track to master with all the slick bluegrooves and cross ruts from the earlier truck/buggy race.
It was a good race, I had fun. I made it home with 5 bucks in my pocket. Talk about cutting it close. This gas price B.S. is killing my racing career.
Jerry Kyle (828) won his class again, congrats to him.
David Gronlund,

Well I was concentrating on the green flag so I missed the infamous Phil endo. I knew something had happened cause they held us up until the track was clear. When the flag dropped two of my MC7 class compadraes jumped out in front of me and Mark Fisk was hot on my heels. Right after the first jump though I passed the first 700 rider, (sorry I don't remember who it was), then about a mile later I went to the inside on a corner and passed the second 700 rider (#714 I think). About 10 laps into the race I caught up with Jim Chapman (#607), we diced back and forth for about 4 laps, excellant bar to bar racing and the funnest part of the race, then on the back section of the course as we exited a turn there was a slow rider in Jim's line and that was the last of that fun. The rest of the race, I dodged lapped traffic and tried to stay out of the cat's way ;). I was glad to see the checkered though, I was getting whipped toward the end. I took first place in the 700 class, my first Whiplash win.

It's a happy thing :D
About the fuel prices, I fueled up at the Pilot store south of Casa Grande. Diesel was $139.99 & Premium Gas $189.99 I filled the tanks in the truck and trailer, if I would have had anything else to hold fuel I would have filled it.

I really enjoyed this track. Tons of fun on the quad. I got a great start in the ATV1 class. I hit the first jump in 3rd place, and I manged to stay on the edge of the top 5 for the first half of the race. Just after halfway, I had to stop for fuel. The thirsty 330 had already used all 4 gallons. After pitting, I really had no idea where I was in relation to everyone else, so I just tried to keep up a good pace and go after anything with a "100" series number. I ended up finishing 6th (out of 12 or 13) in class. I feel pretty good since the first 4 guys did not need to pit.
Yeah, Jeff Henson got 1st place in the ATV Senior Pro class. It was a hard fought victory for him, but in the end, he did manage to beat himself.[}:)] That's right, he was the only Senior Pro entered.

Good job Slyder, and Jeff also. I've had those battles with myself before and they're tough.
I just read my post from monday morning and boy I sounded pretty bitter. Whiplash has some pretty cool races and I don't think anything beats an Arizona desert race. BUT, I've gone on record before and I'll do it again now, they have a crappy points setup and their Pro payback is bogus. I love Sabrina to death and I'm glad she joined the Whiplash team when she did, but that is one thing they definately need to work on (or maybe I just need to get faster). Whatever the solution is I'm an AZ faithful, and as long as it stays fun I'll still race here. I sure am glad to see more people out in the Pro classes too.
Bring on Rocky Point!
David Gronlund,
Ride for fun, race to win.
My story would sound so much better, but SOMEONE had to bring up my competition. ;)
I got a great Holeshot- Dead Last (all pros start together). I thought I had a good strategy by lining up on the far left at the start line. My plan was to rail around the outside, while everyone bunched up on the inside of the first turn. Who put those 2 mounds of dirt out in my line? I guess I should have prerun the start ahead of time.
I geared down for this race...big mistake! I spent way to much time wound out in 6th gear. That really wasn't my problem though. My arms pumped up about midway. I need to get out and ride more. This was only the third time I've ridden all year. I haven't been to the gym since Christmas either. I had fun though! I think I finished 5th overall. I didn't get a white flag and ended up pitting on my last lap after my tank hit reserve. I could have made it to the end. The only other problem I had was my kill switch teather fell off and cut my motor, just after I LAPPED SLYDER (neener neener!)
So yeah, I got first by beating myself. I also got $70 and a big fat trophy. It will be tough driving a nail in the wall to hang this one..but I'll manage. [:p]
I'll be skipping Mexico since I'll be visiting family out of state. I will be racing both Prescott events and look forward to the Alto Pit prerun April 19th.

Just to clarify, Jeff lapped me AFTER my pit stop. I then passed him back during his pit stop on the final lap, so we actually finished on the same lap. Of course, I'm glad he won his money back since it helped to feed the 454 in my truck for the journey to Tucson and back!

I had a great time. I had a crappy start along with David. I can around the first lap seventh, after the second lap I was 5th, and #7 Mr Grunlund flew passed me, but didnt gain much for awhile. I finally worked into 4th and was about 15 seconds behind 3rd (David). Then I don't know what happened either I slowed down or the guy behind me found 5th gear. He motored around me like I was standing still. After feeling like I was running a good pace staying about 15-20 sec back from David I was passed. Man what an ego killer. I last several seconds after that. Most of you bike races might have seen my dad out on the course right after the manure turn holding the pit board. He just held his hands in the air wondering what the heck was going on. I then started yelling at myself to ride hard but that didn't get me any closer. I had to settle for 5th over all and 4th in class. All in all it was a fun race, no crashes, just arm pump.
I hope Mexico is better to me.

What braking bumps! Must be the way you RIDE.
RANDY!!! making the big move up. Congrats on your second in the first timers, which was pretty funny since you and first place first timer Rob stayed on pace with the pros all race. Very cool, and thanks again for the awesome suspension work. It rocks out there on the track.
LONGER, yes Rocky Point is much longer. You will be tired of whoops at the end of that one.
Ben, I seen you back there for a long time. I was wondering if you were going to try something on me later in the race. The guy that found fifth and past you at the end was long time super fast guy and previous ADRA champion Scott Hildebrant. Don't feel bad when he passes you, he is one fast mother. I saw him creeping up on me at the end, I think he had problems early on. I really had to step it up on the last two laps to keep him behind me.
So that was your dad on that nasty off chamber corner. I was wondering because every time I passed by him he would look down at his watch. I figured he was checking the time between me and some one else behind me. He actually showed me the pit board one time with the lap count on it.
Good job everyone, and thanks again Randy (Motorworks Suspension). I'll save you a spot on the front row next race.

How hard is it to add 60 + 15? I mean really, we're not talking about a big 2000 mile race with 1000 entrees. It was a frigin Gran Prix with less than a hundred bikes and even fewer quads.
It's been 3 weeks, you think they could have figured out the results and points by now. I really want to check my lap times against the fast boys.

David, once they get the results posted, you will still not be able to look at your lap times. I was told prior to the race that they were only counting laps, and there would be no times recorded. I'm not Whiplash, so I do not know if this is truly the case, but I do recall them talking this way before the race.

I lost the recognition of an overall win like that in the 97 Canyon Gran prix. It was the last race I did in the expert class, and the last race of the season. I got the hole shot in the expert class and passed all the pros except for Todd Davis who ended up winning the championship that year. He kind of went into cruise mode because he had a huge lead and I snuck up on him in the last lap and we finished what seemed to be 10-20 seconds apart. We had started the race 30 seconds apart so I was sure I had him on time, but their dumb @$$ computer crashed as usual. All they had to go by was our lap count and finishing positions because all the times were lost. I still think Todd slipped Jacky a 50 to say that. That race had the most amount of protests than any other race I had every been to in Az. It was a free for all.
I was pissed but I was sure I would get my revenge later that year. He beat me in every race in 98 except for the one we both DNF'd (Gila Bend) and I had to wait all the way until the first race of the 99 series to beat that guy. I do blame that stupid CR500 though that I used to race and blow up every time the throttle hit full.

I've got the results. There are no lap times or number of laps completed, just finishing order. With that many riders on a 2 mile track, did you really expect to see lap times with just one person keeping count. The 2 wheelers were coming through in bunches of 4-5 sometimes. Whiplash couldn't get the finish order right as it was. Keeping time would have just made it worse. Somebody needs to invest in some scanners (like Adelanto GP) or a transponder system where we all have some sort of device that puts out a signal each time we pass a certain point. That's expensive, so expect the race fees to go up a bit.
It sounds as if Jay is looking for someone to take over Whiplash according to his article in the recent issue of SON. Perhaps we will see some new changes soon.

I was up at Whiplash last week and Sabrina was saying NO WAY to Whiplash being sold. It's all rumors and Jay was just trying to expel those rumors in the article. It didn't read that way to me, but Jay does have a weird way of expressing himself sometimes.
I hope whoever takes over tries to get some sort of AMA sanctioning. Of course that leaves out the Trucks and Buggies and I don't know about the quads. I don't think AMA allows quads to race in the District Hare and Hound series in California. I mentioned to Sabrina that Whiplash would benefit from an AMA sanctioning and that she would get a lot more big named riders and more respect from the desert racing community than what they get from just being a local race organizer with a funny name. She sounded very interested. They would have to run their truck and buggy races separately, hopefully on a different weekend. They did that back in 98-99 and it was awesome, the tracks weren't so tore up when we got to them.
We'll see.

Dave,
That's the best thing I've heard in a long time. AMA sanctioning would be great news for Arizona desert racing. It would not only add credibility and attract riders from other states but I believe it would lower insurance premiums as well. I kind of remember Don Hood from the Arizona Trail Riders telling me this at one of their races. I could be wrong though. All of which are AMA sanctioned by the way. There would be a little(lot?) more conforming to abide by but I personally think it would be well worth the trouble. Any racing body worth its' salt(except maybe the WORCS series) is AMA sanctioned. We should have more then two races per year being sanctioned by them(the Trail Rider events in March and November). Trucks and buggies out, oh well. I don't think they should be anywhere near us anyway. Or we should always go first. Does anyone else think it's ridiculous we run after them? Just a thought.
The AMA definitely does sanction quad racing. They have a division in the National Hare and Hounds(100cc-500cc 16+). They also sponsor the GNCC series back east. They also have an offshoot called the ATVA(All Terrain Vehicle Association) which has more quad class' then I can count. I really don't think that would be an issue. I think we should really try and push this through.
Travis Epperson
P.S. As a pipe dream, wouldn't it be awesome if we could get our stuff together and put on a National Hare and Hound? The Trail Riders did the Nation Enduro in the past so it's not unheard of. The series is down to six races in three states. A new race would be very welcome. I know this from talking to the guys at the races. I realize the bomb run would be the sticking point but if we could get by that somehow just imagine how cool it would be to have that on our schedule.
Jay has had a lot of AWESOME races (Mammoth, San Manuel, Prescott, Young, etc..) and lost them for some reason or other. Mostly his mouth, but lets please not get into that. I have got friends of power and influence in the Mammoth and San Manuel areas that would love nothing more than to get their races back again, but run and hide when Whiplash is mentioned (Oh ya I wasn't going to mention that, sorry). AMA has a lot of pull and backing world wide. I think with that reputation a lot of those controversial races can be possible again.
Awesome to hear about AMA supporting quads, we wouldn't want to leave our 4-wheel buddies out.
Now when you talk AMA Enduros like the ATR races you are talking about an entirely different thing than AMA Hare and Hounds. Hare and Hounds are desert races, that's different. Lets not confuse the two. There are a lot of people in Az that want to see the Enduro circuit grow to have more races put on by smaller clubs like ATR to equal a bigger series. Check out www.EVTR.org. Paul is trying to get something off the ground with that. It's going slow now because lack of interest, but something will happen eventually.
What I'm talking about is helping out AZ DESERT racing by means of utilizing the national standard - AMA. The way it's going now, AZ desert racing will be dead soon. I am for one am all talk, because I would never have the mental capacity, nerve, and Kahunas to try and do what Jay does. I was just hoping that Whiplash could try and make a turn for the better and help themselves out. That is why I mentioned it to Sabrina. She sounded interested, if they make the call or not will be something to look out for.
I do agree with you about the trucks and buggies running with us. It's dangerous for us to run through the silt a day after they do. They can make some hellish ruts with hidden land mines buried deep within the sand and silt. I wish I had a dollar for every hidden rock I've hit in a 2 foot deep truck rut filled with silt. However I do believe they have every right to race just like we do, but they need to be split up better. It's a safety thing. I'm sure they would agree.
BTW, don't forget about Best In the Desert and SCORE when you mention credible desert series.

Apparently the Whiplash staff has been lurking around in the background and read this post and this thread. They are very upset with me and made it clear this past weekend, for that I am sorry. They told Sabrina about it and as the way I took it would read it because she doesn't want to know. I was told that most of the Whiplash staff are volunteers, have full time jobs and work at Whiplash on their own time. They do work hard and do a good job. I guess as a racer I tend to expect more than I should.
In my own defense I would like to point out the many times I have defended Whiplash and commended there races, lets not be to selective in the posts we want to be vocal about. I have said it before and I will say it again they hold an awesome race. The courses are awesome for the most part and are way better than most Cal. race courses. It's cheap (inexpensive) and convenient. I will still hold true on my dislike of the points system, but then again that is another topic all together.
Anyways keep up the good work Whiplashers, and yes Sabrina, you're awesome.

I recived the third degree from Sabrina also on Saturday morning. I will have to say that I'm sorry also, but somethings still ring true. It is great to see cheap entry fees, and a race every month. If that was negative than think about this, I race have raced every race but one in three years. If I said that I didn't enjoy racing with Whiplash I would be lying. It is now Monday morning and I'm ready for the cinder race, most people hate that race because it is so rough, but in my point of view it seperates the men from the boys. The races that Whiplash puts on are rough and true work out, but sometimes it is nice to have change. I hope that there can be some information that can be used to make our racing better here in Arizona.

One other thing along this line. I think the staff at Whiplash have got a bad taste in their mouths about RidingArizona.com from my Ill comments. What I think and post is not neccessarily the views of RidingArizona.com as a whole. I have got negative feed back in the past from other RA members who think I should keep my trap shut. It is a free forum for any one to say what they want (within reason), but as a Moderator (trail guide) I should be more respectable and open minded. Again, forgive me for talking out of my rear end sometimes. RA is a great family oriented site dedicated to the preservation of riding in Arizona and was not created for the reason of bashing other people or orginizations. That is one area I will work on.
