For those of you who did not go to the Mexico race, Our good buddy #607 Jim Chapman has a very serius crash at about mile 70. He was flown out of Mexico to Barrows trama center in Phx. On saturday we heard that he had no feeling in his legs. At the awards deal at jj'S Jay had said when they loaded him in the chopper, he said that his feet hurt. We figured that was a good sign. I rushed home right when the boarder open at 6:00am & was home by 9:00am on sunday. I called the hospital and was able to talk to Jim's wife Pat. I was expecting to hear some good new. Not good, Jim is permittly paralized from the chest down. I am committing myself to do what ever I can to help the Chapman family. Currenttly, Whiplash is taking donations to help with his chopper ride & other rising medical bills. I know money is tight with everyone these days. I'm begging, please. If you can spare even a few bucks great. If you can afford a little more, even better. I am also going to do some kind of fund raser, but not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be most helpfull!!!
Jim just bought a 2003 WR450 about 2 months ago. We will be putting his bike & gear up for sell. I will post in classifieds ASAP. I looked the bike over & did not see any visible damage. So spend the word, anyone looking for a very nice bike this is it. Again, I'm not much of a thinker about issues like this. Please call or drop me a PM if you can help in any way. I will post Jim's address for those who would like to send him a note, card, donation, or what ever?
Thank you much, Phil Brooks # 611 (602-505-2062)

A few folks asked about a paypal acct. Pat Chapman said that they had one in the past but it is no londer in use. She also told me that she did not what folks to have to run up donations on their charge cards. I told her not to worry about it, but will respect her decision. I know we all can't afford to donate, things are tough in the economy & lots of folks stuggle to make ends meet. Don't feel oblagated, a note, card, e-mail, is great medicine.

That is really terrible news. I was hoping all weekend that the swelling would go down in his spinal cord (a miracle) and he'd recover or something like that. Appearently that is not how it works. Jim is an awesome guy and he deserves better than that. I hit that nasty g-out a little earlier in the race and it sent me flying across the desert through the bushes and I remember thinking that someone could really get hurt there. I really thought I had broke my bike in half when I slammed the other side, it was brutal. It was on the furthest part of the course away from anything, he had to be laying out there for ever to get help. A desert racers worse fear.

I can't even imagine what he and his family is going through. Our prayers are with him and his wife.

My thoughts and prayers are with Jim and his family. I crashed my brains out at the exact same spot trying to get by M. Parks. As I laid on the ground I kept thinking what an aweful place to crash. My bike slammed me against the face of the other side. Real sore today. I was just lucky it wasn't me instead of Jim. Definitely a down arrow section when the speeds are so damn high. I guess most things are learned and changed out of tragedy.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I don't like starting a monday off that way. That is one of my biggest fears about running in Mexico, with the speeds well over 100 mph, and the lack of medical attention close it is a huge risk that I don't like to think about. The section where Jim went down I had a few close calls, kissing the front fender nearly going over the bars. The only thing I could think about is how did David and Todd make it through this with out crashing?

Myself and my family give our best to the Chapman's, and hope for a miracle.

Wow, I didn't know you crashed Travis. Sorry to hear that. You ran exceptionally well finishing just a couple minutes behind Todd and me for the expert win and third O/A. If you wouldn't of crashed you may have made us Pros look really silly. You are really opening up some eyes.

I was chasing Todd through that section as I did the entire second half of the race and he was as smooth as glass through that section as he usually is. I for one had some close calls and had to pry the seat out of my you know what a couple times.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Chapmans. Please get some donation info posted soon. I'd like to help out as much as I can.

When I came by Jim was down and had a Quad (don't know the number) and #235 (I think) giving him assistance. Man, I didn't know he was that badly hurt as he was moving around.

That whole section (what like 3-4 miles of it) just before we got on well road was real dangerous. Don't know about you guys but I was having trouble seeing the holes, whoops and crap in that section. They had that big set of danger marking going into that section but they didn't mark any of the nasty stuff from there to well road. The sand was all the same weird brown color and the sun was high enough there was no shadows or contrast to see stuff. I hit some stuff in there that I had no clue was there.

My thoughts and prayers to Jim and his family. There is so much to say and I don't know how to say it. I have often raced handle bar to handle bar with Jim and I keep thinking, if I had been racing I would have been right beside him.
Whatever can be done to help, let me know, I'm in.

I am truly sorry to hear this about Jim. He is a great person and I will pray hard for his recovery. I know the section that he went down in and that's the place where I stared my front fender in the face. Please keep us posted on how to help and where...

I just got back from the hospital. Jim is in very good sprits! They still have not done any surgery on him. He does have good movement in his arms & I could see his breathing looked real good. We joked about him giving up bikes & going to a sand rail. I told him the cat ( EL-GATO ) may need a co-diver in his buggy[:p]. Any way, he is room # 6B01 at Barrows trama in Phx. Mike Parks & I gave his wife Pat $250.00 to start a bank Acct & I will post acct # as soon as she opens it up. His home address is 1036 E. Taro LN. Phx, AZ. 85024 & E-MAIl is JIMCHAPMAN9@COX.NET Parks picked up our photos at the boarder & I will go back down tuesday morning & deliver them. I'll give up-date afterwords on his progress.

I'm glad he is in good spirits. I know the rest of us are all shook up about his condition and how it happened. I saw Jim down and the quad guy was standing next to him so I slowed down and HIT the same dune with pucker bush in the center and almost went over the bars. I have a DEEP bruise on my right bicep today. I did NOT know it was Jim, just yelled at the quad guy I would get help and went 5th gear pinned to the next checkpoint to tell them a rider was down and needed help. Jim laid there for a LONG time. I finished the race and was standing around for 20 minutes before the ambulance left the Oasis. It is the risk we all take racing in Mexico! Phil let's help with things besides finances. I know besides Jims health that is a priority for the Chapmans. Please let Pat know that I'm available to mow the yard, clean the pool and all the other day to day stuff that needs to be done. Racers can rotate weekends, etc. Can we visit him in the hospital or does he not want visitors yet?

I'm also glad he is in good spirits and at least he has the use of his arms. That is a small blessing if any at all. I am sure this will be one long emotional roller coaster for a long time to come.

Good job on all the work you've done so far Phil, keep us posted and thanks for the info.

Some one on one of the other sites had a great idea for a fund raiser. We should try to get together a planned ride to raise some money. I thought we could take it a step further and rent out Canyon Offroad Park. It's a pretty cool MX track, and there is a lot of trails around in the surrounding desert. There is also some pretty cool single track not too far away. I've ridden some but's been a while.

I'm just throwing out some ideas. It may be dumb, but I'm sure the Mckinleys and Whiplash will help as much as possible. They are passionate about things like that.

I don't know how much I can help because there has been yet another trajedy in my wifes family, and I need to focus most of my resources on that.

I think that is a good idea David. I has sent a PM to Phil this morning about the same thing. Phil if you need any help I'm sure I can get my mom, and myself to help. I think we can make this work, but we would have to do it soon. It is getting way to hot for mid day ride. I hope everyone can get up early.

Although I've never had the opportunity to meet Jim Chapman, the news of his injury touches close to home. I see that benefit ride is being tossed around, and I think that is a great idea. When a person is facing a challenge such as this one I am sure it is a great comfort to know that friends and fellow races rally to help.
The benefit ride is a great time for an auction to raise money to help put a dent in Jim's medical costs. I have spoken with Destry Abbott and he feels the same way as we all do and wants to help. He is attending the hare and hound in Utah this weekend and is going to round up a few signed jersey's for an auction. I am unsure as to who is spearheading this effort but you need to contact Destry at DestryAbbott.com before thursday morning in order to coordinate this effort.
I run a small business called MotoLoco, I do race prep for motorcycles and I'm going to toss in a free race prep as an aution item or just all around prize. I know it is not much, but every little bit helps! I am sure if we all get together on this we can get some great auction items and gifts to help raise some money to help his family.
If there is anything else I can do or if anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me at 602-481-0333.

Thanks,
Bryan Bruning

Thanks Brain. Ya, I e-mailed Destry last night. He'll give some Abboutt T-shirts & he said he would do his best to get some pro's to pitch in some autographed items & what not. Don Hood from the Arizona Trail riders is going to talk with Steve Hatch as well. We have two good ideas so far. One would be to hold a fun ride event at Canyon raceway. I thought that maybe the RA's planned camping trip to Camp Wood Memorial week-weekend could a good place to try & raise some funds. Maybe no real organized event, but ask for donations, raffle some of the items we collect, maybe have a lunch/dinner for all & ask a donation for the meal? Just a few ideas to throw around right now. I talked with Pat Chapman today & she said her credit union would not set up a fund-raising acct? She will look into another bank today or in the morning to set one up. Thanks again for every ones efforts!!! Phil

Up-Date, Jim was fitted with a fiberglass back brace today. When they moved him it caused extrume pain. The 4th,5th, & 6th vertabra's are severly crushed. They have decided to go ahead with surgury on thursday morning. They will be installing pins & rods. This will be approx a 6 hour surgury, and is very risky. I'll be going down to support his wife Pat durning the surgury. I will give more up-date ASAP. Please keep Jim in your prayers & heart. Thank you much, Phil

Surgury was today. I went to hospital today and things were running late. He should have went under around 9:00am He did not get wheeled out till 1:00pm this afternoon. I had to get home for a few hours sleep B4 work, so I have no news as yet. I'm positive he'll pull through just fine & I'll report back ASAP. I stopped by Destry's Abbott's house this morning B4 heading up to the hospital. Destry gave me a autographed jersy & poster to give to Jim. He sure is a class act! I just got a personal E mail from Pat Chapman. The surgery went well. They paced a titanium rod and screws in his back to support the vertabrae. Pat said he may be in rehab as early as one week from now. Thats all I know for sure - anything more would be speculation. Just so you Racers know Pat has downloaded a lot of our chat stuff from the RA web site for Jim to read :D. When things calm down and she has a little more time she will post a message to the RA Family. :D

I am sitting here feeling very humbled by the enormous outpouring of support and everything for a fellow rider. I know from being around a lot of you racers for years that it is a tight knit group and this really shows it. If there is anything I can do to help set up a ride, planning, etc. let me know. my email is piratediver@earthlink.net

I would be honored to help in any way possible. Don Hood has my phone # and can let me know also. I feel bad for not being able to check in sooner, and I had heard from Jeff Sims (wiplash #107) that sombody got hurt in mexico, but he did not know who.

All of my prayers will be focused on Jim now and helping him in his recovery. As well as his family and friends supporting him.

Also Phil you are one hell of a guy and a great friend for doing what you have. My hat is off to you!

I think my saying at the bottom may really speak volumes to some of you in ways it only scratches the surface for others. Keep your spirits high and aim for the stars and nothing is beyond your grasp!

Just got back from hospital, well actually I left at 1:00pm this afternoon. Jim had surgury that started around 1:00pm thursday, & lasted till about 8:30pm. I saw him at 9:00am this morning & he was in much pain. Did not talk to him, I just kinda stayed out of the way. I know I'm supposed to be a tough guy, but I broke down & cryed. I hated to see him hurting so bad. They gave him more morphine & he was in & out. By 1:00pm they were able to to take him off the resperator to breath on his own. Things are looking good and hope to have him in a brace as soon as saturday morning. Can't tell much more but I will go back later this evening to check up on him. I have more people to thank than I can remember for all your thoughs, prayers & support. Everyone as been wonderfull. I know lots of folks would like to go down to see him, but please lets wait till he gets out of ICU & can get back into a room. His wife Pat is standing strong but extrumely tired. Please do not try to call her as she has her hands full right now. She also has two beautiful children at home to worry about. I will up-date later & let you know when he is up to seeing visitors again. Thank You much. Phil

I know this will seem a little out of place but I think it is very fitting so I am going to post it anyway. I received this little story from my mother, who is dealing with her own health issues. She is not the author, but, again, it really made me think of this situation. You may find it uplifting.
-----------------------------
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. The worst had happened - everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me?" he cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.

It's easy to get discouraged sometimes when things appear to be going badly. But we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, the next time your little hut is burning to the ground, it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God.

For all the negative things we have to say to ourselves, God has a positive answer for it.

Thanks Shannon, having faith & staying positive....
I went up to see Jim about 8:00pm last night. I knew his wife had already gone home & I wanted to see if there was any thing he wanted to say that he would not say in front of her. Unbevievable, he is in a good mood and is very positive to start rehab. That's half the battle right there! We shot the B/S & laughed a bit. Not sure if he was laughing with me or at me, ( I'm such a bonehead [:o)] )
We hope Jim will get out of ICU some time today or at least by sunday morning. Then hope to start rehab within a week. His fire has been spotted & he is in the hands of some good folks with the supervision of God to guide us along. We are all positive with Jim's recovery. It will be a long road but we can already see the light at the end. I bevieve we will reach the the end of the road sooner then we think. I can't wait til he is at home where he'll feel much more comfortable.
I'll be up to see Jim later today give up-date later on his progress.

It is difficult to express how very much your support means to Jim, to me, and to our daughters. The e-mails, messages, donations, are so very much appreciated.

I had mentioned to Jim not too long ago that Mexico was bad luck for us. On the way to a race there a couple of years ago, the fuel pump went out on his truck in the middle of nowhere. Last year, he had a problem with a kidney stone, and I had to drive the truck and RV back across the border with him writhing in pain all the way to a Phoenix hospital. I guess I should have been listening to my inner voice telling me Mexico is not Chapman-friendly.

I want to acknowledge Phil Brooks with my deepest gratitude. Phil has truly been God-sent. I expect any day now a bright light will appear behind him, and Della Reese will be singing. He is providing so much support. When I asked him about a jersey from Destry Abbott for Jim, we had one the next day, along with a poster. My thanks to Destry as well. Jim has been privileged to be passed by you many times on the course. Phil has also gotten his company to donate a wheelchair. Last night when I was driving home from the hospital, Phil called me and I mentioned to him Jim seemed especially depressed. Even though visiting hours were almost over, Phil went back to the hospital, and got Jim reminiscing and laughing. I can't thank him enough for that. Phil has also offered to go through re-hab with us. There is much to learn and having Phil for both practical and emotional support will make things easier.

My deepest thanks to Whiplash, especially Sabrina and Matt. My thanks to all who sat with Jim in the desert while awaiting help, and to those of you who alerted the staff that he was down. I will be eternally grateful for all that you did.

I am hoping in the months ahead, Jim will want to come out to the races and cheer you guys on. But, just don't underestimate him. I saw an article on the web about an off-road wheelchair that goes over 50 mph. He may still give you a run for your money.

We will keep you current on Jim's progress but, in the meantime, God bless you all, and may He keep you safe. Good luck at the Cinders (you'll need it!).

Please do not underestimate the power of many people praying for one end.
Jim will be on his feet again and we all need to know it, and can make it happen.
Please, do not settle for anything less in your prayers as and end result.
Keep your thoughts and prayers on him NOT being in a wheelchair the rest of his life with good spirits about it.
THATS NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
I will settle for no less than a good recovery with him remembering what it was like, and how close he came.
Even if he chooses to never ride again after the recovery and simply be involved the events. Thats what I will pray for and be happy with.

I keep seeing post & getting messages on what a good job I'm doing & great guy I am. Thanks for your thoughts about me but that's not nessecrey. Those who know me see a shy, fairly quite, low-keyed person, pretty much a bonehead. I try to stay to myself alot (kinda a hermit). I do not talk alot, not much to say but it's easy to hide behind a keyboard & spill my guts. I only see myself in this position due to faith. This is something new to me & I have a lot to learn. I'm not a smart man ( you should easyly see by my crappy spelling & grammer) and I curtainly do not always do the right things. I feel that I'm totally under the direction of a higher power. I'v never really been a church going guy, but do not feel that stops me from beleiving in God. I am foretunilty in the right place & time to help the Chapman family in any way I can. I only live within a few miles of his house & the hospital. Working the night shift gives me time (that most folks do not have) to spend my time with them. My kids have since grow & moved on to start their own lives, so I do not have the responsiblity's at home like most do. In fact I have planty of spare time on my hands. I catch myself sitting around in the morning after work, many times drinking way too much beer. Pretty much a waste of my time & my life. Never had much of a goal to a work for. Ya, I tell myself I'm going to do this or that, a few more beers than tend to foreget about it.
Jim's accident has changed many lives, including mine now. I look at things in a totally different way now. How? I can't even explain it to myself, I do not even feel like the person I'v been in the past.
I guess I'll have to steal a quote from Forest Gump: "I'm not a smart man, but I do know what love is"
Up-date on Jim, as of last night he is still in ICU. The tubes going in & out of his side where they went in to do surgury have been removed. Thoses tubes were driving him nuts. They were still working on fitting his back brace, so they had just juiced him up with more pain med. He was still in good sprits, but wants go get the hell out of that stinkin hospital. I will stop on my way to work to see him again later this afternoon (sunday). We are still hopeing to bust him out of there very soon.
I can still never thank everyone for all you have done. I think that Pat was able to get some good rest last night, at least I sure hope she did? Knowing how much support we all have for their family is very comforting for her.
Also as Pat has mentioned, I want to thank my boss Ruben Vidal at McKesson Drug & health care dist., for donating a wheel chair. I'v never looked into the cost of one, but I'm sure they are not cheap.

Up-date on Jim, but first off guys Pat is not kidding about this off-road wheel chair. She showed me a artical off the web on this racing chair. It has 4) 20" mountain bike tires w/ disc brakes. I'm not sure what the power plant is, but they claim it to run up to 50 MPH. To tell you the truth, I'd like to see him get a qaud. That way he could still do the things he loves so much. He has always been quite the sportsman & I believe a qaud could get him outdoors to his favorite areas that he enjoys.

I went up to see Jim at 4:00pm (sunday) He is now out of ICU. He is now on the 8th floor, room # 14 at Barrows. All the tube & wires have been removed except a IV drip & oxygen, but hope to ween him off that very soon. His lung muscles need to get more strenth so he can breath totaly on his own. I sence he is feeling a little lonely, so I'm sure he is up to it & would love to have visitors. He did not have the back brace on but he said they had it no & off a few times. I would guess that within a few days he might be moved to rehab. Other than the fact he wants to get out of the hospital he is still in good sprits.

Phil and Patricia,

Let me know if and when Jim will need things around the house to keep him mobile like chairs, lifts, ramps and such. I have a wonderful friend in California that does these things for a living. He offered help without me even asking. He is a rider and former D37 racer himself and wouldn't hesitate to help if he can.

I just got back from visit with Jim. This really sucks. We were hopeing to have Jim start rehab any day now. When I got to the hospital they were getting Jim preped for surgury. It seems one of his lungs is not attaching to the lining or what ever the medical term is called. They are going back in to work on the lung & repair? This should'nt be too big a deal, but just pro-longs his recovery. I can't tell much more right now, but Patricia will call me later this evening to let me know how he is doing. I'm sure he will be back in the ICU again for a day or two so he may not be able to see visitors for a bit. I'll up-date later tonight or in the morning. Thank you, Phil

Patricia is swamped with phone messages & e-mail's & makes it difficult to get back with everyone.

Up-date, Jim had surgury to repair collapist lung on tuesday. When I saw him today in ICU he seemed to be OK but in pain. He was still in fairly good sprits concidering all he has been through. I did not stay to long as lunch was being served, I figured best I give Him & Pat a break from me & eat in peace.
Tonight Patricia called me & said he is back in a room on the 8th floor in room # 2. He is doing much better today than the past few days. Do not know much more now, but I'll pay a visit in the morning to check up on him. Thank you!

Phil, hats off to you for stepping up to let us know and keep us informed in this on going tragedy. There can never be too much prayer and you have helped to bring many prayers for Jim. And prayers can bring miracles. On a more simple level, I had a thought for another fundraiser. How about a raffle to help pay bills? You mentioned jim owned a wr450, how about raffling that off? 500 tickets at $20 each would bring in $10,000. or you could consider different numbers. 500 tickets at $30 = $15,000. I hope this doesn't sound mercenary, but there was a time when I couldn't work for quite a while and the bills kept coming in. Maybe we could ask for merchandise to be donated for a raffle too?

Thanks for the idea RL. Im not sure patricia is ready to sell just yet. We would like Jim's aproval before selling it. That's kinda the last thing we are worried about at this time. It's got to be hard on Jim to let go & we do not want to make this any harder on him as it already is. He may or may not want to see the bike one last time? We do know it will have go to soon & we will post ASAP.

Up-date on Jim. I have not been up to see him since thursday afternoon. He was in a lot of pain & on three different medicaions. Mark Fisk #747 was there on thursday as well, so we felt best to give patricia & him some time alone. Today (saturday) Patricia & their girls Kelly & Katie, will be having a family visit with Jim. I'll be sure to put some things together for you tomorrow. It's really great that you're keeping us all up to date on Jim. I check in on the site almost every day to see how he's doing. Thank you Destry, You are a class act & have proved that fellow racers & play riders are great caring family folks. It seems that when things are looking down, we pull together & make quite a difference. With a little help & a lot of faith I see good things ahead. The Chapman family is most greatfull knowing we all standing beside them with our support. Stay strong & believe, miracles do happen.

Up-date on Jim, I had a visit with him last night. His wife & two girls were there for a visit early. He did not want to take any pain medicaion while the girls were there so he could stay alert for them. When I arrived at 7:45pm, he had just receive some thing for his pain. He said it was hurting pretty bad. I just shot some B/S & tried to get his mind off of it. His lung surgury seems to be a success but still needs to work on building up his lung volume.(low oxygen level in his blood) Thats kinda tuff do to the pain in that area, but must continue using a beathing exercise tool. We believe as soon as tuesday he will be transfered to a rehab center near Jonh C. Lincoln hospital off Dunlap & 3rd ave. He will have to remain there for approx 3 month's for the fractured vertibras to heal. He should have cat-scans within 6 weeks to check the progress. I was hopeing he could come home but they will need to keep a 24/7 eye on him. I'll let every one know when he makes the move over to rehab & give exact address. Thank you

Have some good ideas on the benefit ride that I want to share with Whiplash & RA first before going further. Hope to have the decals for the Cinders with all proceeds to Jims payable account.
Destry, everyone that reads this format is glad to hear from you knowing you care so much about an injured racer. Thanks from all of us for the effort! :D Once the benefit ride details get sorted out we would love to have you and other pro racers attend if schedules allow.

I'm not going to Camp Wood this weekend. Too many people have other things going on this week due to the holiday. Plus the fact this was such a short notice I think we can plan a better event over the summer. I believe if we wait till late October, early Nov. when it cools down we will have a better turn out.

Up-date on Jim. I have not been able to see him since saturday night. He should have been transfered over to Bryan's extened care rehab center today. This is located at 9155 N. 3rd street. Just 1 block south of Hatcher. I was able to take a tour of the center with Pat on monday.
We feel this center was very nice with a very careing staff. Jim will get 24/7 care at this center. We talked with other folks who had loved ones in this center & they said the staff was wonderful. Another plus is this center is within 6-7 miles from the Chapman home which will make things easier on Pat. Also only about 4 miles from my house. He will be at this center for aprox 3 months. I'll go check on Jim in the morning to see how he is doing. Thank you , Phil

I did'nt think I'd be able to walk for a few days but I managed to get moving. I saw Jim on friday night, not really much change. He can not start rehab for at least 5-6 more weeks, so he will be moved to a different room this week ( something to do with insurace cost of room) He is still in good sprits but getting a little bummed about being cooped-up indoors & away from home
I just spoke with Pat this evening. She told me they were able to get Jim into a wheel chair today & got to go out side for a short time. This was his first time out doors in 3 weeks. Sorry, do not have much to add, but I will be going up for a visit in the morning.
Pat will be going back to work this week so I'm sure he would love for some visitors to drop by during the day. Thank you.

Stopped by to check on Jim friday night. He is doing OK but going nuts! It's been 5 weeks now since his accident & just laying flat on his back. He wants to get out of there so bad. He is quite the out-doorsman, so you could only amagin his fustraion. He should get cat-scans in the next 2 weeks or so to see how the bones are heeling. Hopefully will ba able to begain rehab shortly after that.

I stopped by his house saturday to see want needs to be done. Mainly we need to widen 2 doors in the house to make wheelchair accessable. If any one has access to a 36" & a 34" doors with frames/jams, let me know. I would like to install these within the next few weeks. I'll buy them & install myself unless I can find someone to donate them to us. I also measured his roof but still need to figure out sq footage. Jim's father should be able to pull out the shower & install a new one that will acomadate him better. We'll still need to build up some kind of ramp at the front door. I'm not sure what to do there other than to break up existing concret. Then re-pour at a bit of a slope. I have a concret buddy that should be able to help me with that. Also going to need to tare out a closet in the bathroom to make a bit more room for Jim to more around in. That should'nt be to big a deal, but will need to re-tile floor after that. Other then things mentioned above, I can't think of much more that will need to be done.
Also if anyone knows how to get ahold of # 603 Mark Sinkovick, let me know. I talked with him at the Cinders & he said he may be able to get the roofing shingles we need donated. I'd like to see if thats possible soon. I'll sit & figure sq footage ASAP & get that ball rolling.
Oh ya, almost forgot to mention. Jim's dauthers Kelly & Katie had a car wash last saturday while we were up at the Cinders. The girls raised over $800.00 to help out their daddy! Great job Kelly & Katie! your mom & dad is so proud of you:D

After giving this much thought I have decided that for a period of 3 months, 6-9-03 to 9-9-03, I will donate 10% if the sales of my engine coolers to the Jim Chapman fund. To qualify for this offer a customer must mention "Jim Chapman" as this will help make people aware of the on going situation. The engine coolers can be seen at www.atvcoolpower.com I believe that by making this offer it will encourage other businesses to come up with similar offers. I believe that most people in RA will check in on the Jim Chapman topic from time to time and will help out as they can.

Phil you are sure doing a lot of work around Jims house with little help. Please let us know when your doing specific jobs so some of us can come and help out. Also the girls car wash did better than the stickers. $577.00 right now but I have about 25 stickers left. Trying to get Jim's # 607 before I gave it to Pat.

Fisk, I have one of my remodeler buddies coming over to install 2 doors this weekend. I'm just going to Home Depot right now to buy the doors. Also if you have a few white stickers, Pat would like some. I gave her 6 already but she gave them to some family members. Also I have already measured the roof, just need to save up to purchase the materials. I do not plan on re-roofing till end of summer when it cools down a bit. Thank you for you help & see you soon. Still not much change with Jim. He is still waiting for X-ray tech's to see how vertabra's are healing.
The company Jim works for is going to set him up on a computer today. This should help him keep up to date on what's going on at work + he can see what we are doing in the riding world.

Also we are looking for a referal for some concrete work done at Jim's house. We need a driveway poured, Approx sixe 12' x 50'. Not looking for a specail deal or discount, just would like a reliable person / company to come out & do a good job. The city of Phx gave the Chapman's 30 days to complete the work. ( not allowed to park on dirt) Their home is in the area of 10th ST. & Union Hills. Please PM me if you could help set me in the right direction. Thank You:)

Had a visit with Jim on saturday night. It's been a week since they took the last X-ray's. Dr's still yet to give results? He seems to be in a good mood & chomping it the bit to get started with rehab. I wish those Dr's would get things rolling.

Jim does have his work lap-top computer with him now. I forgot to ask what E-mail address he has for it. Hopefully we can send messages to him while his in the hospital. Wish I could add more but it's just a waiting game now.

Sorry I hav,nt up-dated. I saw Jim Friday night. He just got recent results of his last X-rays. Bones are healing but he was told that he will have to stay at Bryans Center til Aug 8th. Real bummer, it's been 8 weeks saturday since he was injuried. Now were looking at 6 more weeks at least before he can start rehab. He is bummed but kinda knew this would be the news. Don't tell on me, but I brought him a margarierta in a soft drink cup[}:)] I think he earned that one.

I do have his E-mail address to his lap-top on my home computer mail. I'll post it when I get home.

I am also writing a letter to Jay at Whiplash. I'm hopeing that we can do a fund raiser race at PMP after the next race in September. I'v run out of any other option at this point. I'm still open for any other ideas in the Phx area?

Made it by to visit Jim on Friday July 4th. Good spirits but a little bummed about not starting rehab soon. Jim's days are kind of long being stuck in that room and I know all visitors are welcome. #611 posted a e-mail address for Jim. When I used it I received a return E saying Jim was on medical leave. This is his work lap top address.
You folks get by and visit for a few minutes when possible!

Phil you were looking for fund raising ideas and you said that you were going to put Jim's bike up for sale. Why don't you raffle is bike and gear off. Sell tickets for $5 or $10 or some such amount then have a drawing to determine who will win the motocycle and gear. You should be able to raise more money than just selling the motorcycle out right. Anyway just an idea.

Sorry, It's been awhile since my last post on Jim. I talked with Jim tonight. His most recent ex-rays show that his serverly crushed vertabre's are still far from healed properly. The doctors told him it should be at least 2 more months before he can start any kind of rehab. As you all know It's been nearly 4 months now since his accident in Mexico. He is still at Bryant's care center in N. Phx & will remain there for at least 2 more months.

I saw Jim breifly last wensday. He was on his way up-stairs for a short theropy session so I had to leave. I went back on saturday for another visit. It was good to see that he now is up in a wheel chair & moving himself around. This is the first time I'v seem him up & about. He is still very limited to movement but great to see him in the up-right positon. He seems to be in good mood & we watched some off-road truck races on the speed CH[:p] Jims wife Pat came in and looks exhausted. It's been tough on her working, raising two teens, & running back & forth to visit Jim. Hopefully we'll get Jim back over to St. Joes soon where he'll get extensvie theropy. I slipped out shortly after Pat arrived to give them some time together.

I was at Jim's house last week. To my surprise I saw a sport qaud in Jim's garage. It was not his, but he is trying to size himself up for one. I thought he would go for a 4x4 auto, but he has figured a way to fab some air switches on the handle bar to activate the shifter on a sport qaud.:D It should'nt be to long before we Jim out & about stirring up dust again!
Also by now, he should have all the hand controls installed in his truck, so he should be back to driving himself to work again. He's been working out of his house on a system his company set up for him.
Jim wanted me to say thank you all for the prayers, thoughts, donations. We hope to see him back out at the races soon..... Watch out qaud guys[}:)]
