A side from the terrible crash of Jim I would like to say congrats to all of the R.A. races. We all did really good this weekend.

I got a first in Open Pro,
Todd Johnson got a first in 30+ Pro,
Ben Hutchinson (Dezrcr) got the second in Open Pro,
Travis Epperson (Trajisto) got a first in the expert (100's) class,
Steve Feld (Lizrdlipz) got first in the Masters (40+ Pro) class,
Mark Fisk (Racerfisk) got a first in the 700 class,
Phil Brooks got a third in the 600 class.

R.A.ers were 1st through 4th Overall. Now that's sweet.

I know I'm forgetting a few people, help me out guys.

I have to also post for a few other buddies that are members, but don't say much. #505 or Tank as known on RA finished 4th in his third race ever! He did a great job. Also Dezthumper finished 6th or 7th? not sure, but he had some difficulties with the track,we won't go there. At least he finished and had a great time.

AWE!, sounds to me like he was one of the unlucky ones that got lost and went down the wrong (smooth) side of the railroad tracks.

El Gato :D I'm really sore today! Do you have the address of the photo guy for Lukeville? I was low on $$$$$ [V] and need him to COD my pics to me. What i really want to know is how you beat me to Gila Bend. Behind me in Ajo and in front of me @ Gila Bend - U really do know those Pro Lines to take. Congrats again on your win. I don't think I want to ever go any faster than that until next year! [8D]

Mark, good job again, you earned that plaque. I didn't realize you were low on cash at the border or I would have floated you a 10 for the picture. I guess I'm not good at reading between the lines, you have to be more clear next time. I'll see what I can find out about that guy, but don't hold your breathe. As far as the super secret short cut around Ajo, only me and James Bond knows where it's at. Actually Todd Johnson showed it to me last month. It's faster but a little annoying because it's got some sharp curves. You basically skirt around the outside of town by the golf course (east).

All righty then... I'm finally writing in. Enough "shadow dancin'..."

Yeah, I took a turn that was perfectly marked. Marked better than any Whiplash event ever. There were ribbons everywhere, mile marker signs, everything.

It appears that there were a dozen or so of us that took the very beautiful "scenic route."

Allow me to speak for myself and, possibly the other dozen or so that took time, effort and energy to travel an additional 13 miles or so...

Here is my bench racing story: Travis was in front of me at about the 25 mile mark. In front of Travis was a pro quad. Travis, being the blazing fast guy that he is, passed the quad in pretty thick dust. I ate dust for a mile or so and also passed. Once I came out of the dust, Travis' dust was far up ahead... so I thought. The ribbons started getting further and further in between. I could still see dust... then I saw ribbons again. Lots of them. The track was perfectly marked! The mile marker signs were in abundance. It wasn't too long that I noticed very few knobby tire tracks... hmmmm...

I looked behind me for the quad I passed miles back... No quad. Then the mile marker 35 popped up. THIS WAS WHERE THE PIT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE! Arrrgh! I slow down a bit and start thinking about my situation. Am I on an old track? No the signs look new. Am I on the truck track, a portion that I was not aware of? No, I have the same track map the truck guys have... Mile marker 40 pops up... now I am certain that I'm in the wrong place. Thus, wisely I stop, turn the bike off and listen. I HEAR NOTHING. I SEE NO DUST. Then I think, ok, so I took the track we were supposed to race on, but where does it hook up with the real race track? If past the pit, how do I gas up? I can't ride against uncoming raging race-a-holics! Further, what if I go down out here in the middle of Mexico desert? There's no scheduled sweep nor other riders to offer help or medical attention. I have a family so I do the next wisest thing, I slow my crazy butt down. Another mile marker post goes by, I think it was 45. I stop, turn he bike off and look around. I hear off in the distance beautiful sounds of race machinery! YES! I'm saved! Hallejuah!

I get back on it and suddenly see bikes and quads coming at me! I thought, holy crap, I've looped around and am totally confused. I pull off to the side and as I do, the bikes and quads shoot to my left. Whew! They aren't coming right at me, the race track darts off to the left. I approach a Whiplash voluteer, rip off my helmet and say unkind things about markings and that if he didn't radio in, that there would surely be others to follow me. I also asked that they sweep the area just in case. I suggested that next time, the old course markings be removed or at a minimum, have someone parked there at the "change-of-track-mark" at the beginning of the race, to direct traffic. As I understand it, a person was sent there and some of the 4s, 5s and others - as well as the trucks - were saved from my anquish.

The fun part was pulling into the very oppositve end of the pits. I see a few 2s and a 3 fly by. My race was done. I finally found my pit folks so valiantly searching for me with binoculars --- looking UP the track for my dumb a$$. They gas me, Jason Keyes calms me down by encouraging me and I take off again. At first I felt down hearted, a bit defeated. But, as most racers will attest, the competitive instinct kicked the ars of the little baby talkin putz AND IN AN INSTANT I was off and running again. I began to pass bikes and quads again, yet in a more trail-riding/having-fun-mode. It was neat to slow down next to some of my fellow racers and wave, or holler at 'em, giving some the thumbs up and some of 'em a little roost, all in fun....

QUESTION:
The dunes section scared me a bit. I was certainly out of my league. I simply couldn't see the derivations in the elevation changes and thus would be kicked up high - sort of like the first-time-racer at Snow

this is Nick (desertsandrider), using stacy's computer since i am still in phoenix after returning from mexico....... wow...what a sweet trip.... first of all..the trip down was cool as hell, then we decided to stay at the oasis instead of the playa de oro since we didn't want the problem of getting the bikes teched and so on from so far away. ........before we get to the race results...we'll talk about friday night........without going into any detail....we were out too late... .....we were not allowed back into the toy hauler at 1am.......slept on the ground/back of trucks........ok..our fault...made wifey mad, now it is morning........hit the quick riders meeting and start the race......feeling like hell......stacy " finished" the race in the 300 class, and his long time buddy from kansas city, MO pulled a 6th place finish in the first timers quad class on a stock suzuki 400....and i after an insane tire clashing/flipping/barrel rolling accident(the other guy ate it.....not me) i took 4th in the 200 quad class. all in all, we had a good time...just weary of mexican police and all the stories..etc..etc. we are ready for the next mexican race!

dezthumper,
I did not realize the old course was still marked. No wonder EB was so pissed for being DQed. He was made an example of. I would be lying if I said I wasn't fighting mad though after working so hard to get by EB early in the race and reel TJ in to find EB mysteriuosly up ahead of us again after the beach pit in the lead somehow. TJ was so pissed after struggling to pass him for a few miles or so for the second time that he gave EB a little love tap when he went by. I fell way back in their dust and when I finally got up to EB for the pass TJ was checking out on us again. In EB's credit, he did pull over and let me by but not after about a 2 mile chase. Whatever, I'm over it.

Sorry you got turned around, that can really ruin a good race. I do agree with you guys, they should have marked that part better or had a traffic controller present, but they did have to run out there and do it an hour before race time.

Anyways, Congrats on all your finishes and we'll see you at the next one.

As far as how to go through that mini little sand dune section, when I figure it out I'll let you know. I was freakin just like you guys. I had a couple close calls, and blew some turns. Sometimes the best way to go through something like that is to slow down and pay attention. Slow down to go faster, its wierd but it works. Of course there is always that guy way back pushing hard trying to be a hero, so don't slow down to much. TJ looked really smooth in there and didn't make many mistakes. I did use that dangerous section to my advantage and caught back up to him there, but I was trying to be a hero. I'm lucky I didn't crash.

It sure helps when you have some one like TJ blazing the trail. I got behind him and watched what he was doing. I knew where all the turns, g-outs, and other dangerous spots were before I got there. He was my seeing eye dog so to speak. Mexico is a scary race to be leading overall. You never know what is going to be around the next corner or over the next rise. Speaking of that, how scary was it weaving around those big @$$ haul trucks on Well road at 100mph[:0]?

Yeah that is great laying on the gas tank coming head on with a 40,000 lb dump truck, wondering if he is going to make a sudden left hand turn and try to take you out. I puker everytime I go down that road. This time was not too bad only three, and one actuly stopped before I went by. The other two just kept driving, and honking when I went by.

Very cool Mark. Ben does do an awesome job building them 4-strokes. Jimbo just brought down both his race bikes to be gone through. Ben is going to be busy the next couple weeks. I'll probably help him out as much as possible. He just registered at RA so maybe we can get him to post once or twice.

What a race... It was the closest I've had in a long time. Steve Richards put up quite the battle for 70+ miles. We had several exchanges and tangled bars a couple of times. It seemed that at every turn, Richards was on me like fly paper. I had a pretty bad ordeal in the pits when I fell over and gas spilled all over me, both hands were drenched. Coming out of the pit my gloves slipped on the grips for the next ten miles. The last time I felt his presence was on the Well road when I slowed a bit for one of those trucks, he blazed by in between the truck and me. I was quite surprised because I hadn't seen him since the beginning of the road going up to Uncle Bucks. I passed him right back before the Well Rd pit and never looked back. I expected to see him at the end but found out he had stuck a piston between the Gate and the final road crossing. Hats off to
Mr. Richards.

I guess I'll take a minute to tell my story. eight 600's entered in this event. front row was # 622 Neil Goodale, #603 Kevin Higgins, # 611 ME:D, & # 607 Jim Chapman 2nd row, Last years 40+ Champ # 601 Ron Edwards, # 606 Mark Sinkovic, And can't recall off hand other rider, (sorry) Flag drops & I pulled the hole-shot. I led about the first mile, then here came Higgins past me. I caught him back & we diced it out for a mile or 2. He's on a KX 250 so when things got smooth I pulled away on the BRP. I could see Chapman coming so I had to keep on the thottle. I slowly pulled away and they disapeared in the dust. I started to catch some of the 100's & pro qaud & had to slow a bit in the dust. Shortly after the Rail station, here came Ro Edwards. He blew past me through the woops and gave me the Destry Abbott wave. Man he was flying[:0]. About 5-10 miles after the Pit stop, Here came John Middleton. I tried hard to stay out front but I kept blowing corners. The BRP just likes to go stright & fast. I finnly pull to the side & had to let John go & watched him disapear. I caught up with Pro Desi wolf on the well raod & thought man I'm cooking! I followed him all the way to the pit on well rd where he stopped. Turns out he just was having trouble with with his bike:(. About 4-5 miles later, He blew by me like I was standing still[:0]. From there on till the finish I diced it out with a couple of 100's. # 103 & I must have past each other 10 times taking turns eating each others dust. After crossing the final Highway crossing I was beat. I just took it easy to get to the finish line. Thats the stretch where I crashed wide open in the Point to Point last December, So I was being extra cafefull in the nasty silt. I came in 3rd a couple of minutes behind John. Ron most have been sitting around for while drinking a cool one waiting on us slow guys[xx(]. # 603 Higgins rolled in 4th. I should have picked up 1 more point on Higgins & should lead the 40+ divison by a slim 2 points:D. Was a great race till we waited for Chapman to roll in, I knew he could not be too far behind. Pretty much was crushed shortly after being informed about Jim's crash & put a damper on the weekend. Sam Myers Brother gave us the news. I jumpped in my truck & start heading toward the well road to see if I could find Jim. I got about 3 miles down the highway when I saw two different medical transports going two different directions. I just turned back & returned to the RASH truck. There was'nt much we could do but wait.

Ola El-Gato - Situation Normal 4 me - Gasoline Tanker rolled over between Laughlin & Searchlight so I will be gone all next week too! Hey I was talking with Jay who is lead guitarist & singer for "Greenhaven" rock band & they would be glad to help with any benefit we do for Jim Chapman. Jay can also get other bands to help so let's get Phil # 611 to sit down with us and do some planning. If Zack or Whiplash can give us a local place to hold an event it would be great. Are others planning any type of event? Whiplash or Riding AZ? We should ALL work together for the common goal. Maybe you can use those good orginizational skills of yours and get something going ASAP. If you want to talk in depth E me @ Racerfisk@aol.com - I will check my E @ hotel through next week.
