I was in the Mazatzal wilderness area this past weekend.
I don't know if thats the place your looking for..
It's near Strawberry you take the Fossil Creek road in to FR#428 then you come to the Twin Butte turn FR#194. It goes in 5 miles to a dead end on top of a ridge. From there there are pipes in the ground separated enought for a quad to get through and a sign stateing the Verde River trail. There are no signs saying off limits to any moterized veh's but the trail gets real hard to see. You need to depend on stacked rocks in alot of cases to show the way. At the deadend I went back about 5 miles before turning around. Alittle nervous about being by myself. Judging from the map after getting back I figured I was half way to the verde.
My next trip I'm going to talk to the Ranger to make sure it's a legal trail and have someone with me.
Hope it helps........

You can also access the Mazatzal area from the highway at the top of the divide next to Mount Ord just before the highway drops down to Slate Creek. The dirt road heads back northwest into the mountains. The elevation might not be high enough to deter the hot weather though.

Mazatzal Peak is in the wilderness area, no motorized vehicles. I've hiked the trail a few times, it's very rough and tight.
