View Full Version : Buy or Rent a toy hauler?
I'm trying to figure out how often I would have to use a toyhauler to justify buying it. Let's say I was going to buy a smaller (21') toy hauler. Can you guys help me with an estimate of cost of ownership per year for that. Assuming I get a mid priced 21' and financed it. And assuming I have to pay to store it all year. Please include insurance and tags. Thanks.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU WANT SOMEONE TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK FOR YOU. IF YOU REALLY WANT THE USE TO OVERWEIGH THE PRICE,GO MORE OFFTEN. TELLING THAT TO MY WIFE IS HOW I'M ABLE TO GO 3 WEEKENDS A MO ALL SEASON. AND FOR STORING IT IF YOU JUST USED IT A FEW DAYS AGO AND AGAIN IN A FEW DAYS YOU CAN KEEP IT AT YOUR HOUSE. POSS BRIB YOUR NIEBORS WITH SOME,NO LOTS OF COOKIES,ETC....;)

I would guess the following.
1. Trailer cost: 750 - 1000 dollars per foot.
2. Insurance: 250 - 500 dollars per year.
3. Storage: 50 - 150 dollars per month.
4. Tags are just like a car, based on value: 200 - 400 dollars per year.

5. The fun you will have and the friends you will meet: priceless.
Go for it Z1500. We use ours more than I ever imagined we would.
Kevin,
Your going thru the same thoughts I went threw.
I figured I would take it out at least 6 times a year if I went myself. If my wife would be interested make that 8.
The cost for storage I found a place on the west side for $32 a month cheaper if you pay every 6 months.
Insurance depends on where you live. Maryvale has higher rates..:(
Tagges and interest on the loan..Tax break
So look at it as if you had another child. You can never justify having another one till it pops out.
I have a new born crying for attention right now at the storage lot.

I have the fun mover 31C toy hauler, got it used and its in awesome condition, I use it virtually every weekend I am home, its easy on us old people to have the rv out with us when we ride, also the wife is happier in the rv when we are out riding, and we can spend more time out there than normal.

to help off set the cost there are a few companys that offer a rental service. they store it maintain it and repair it if needed, they give you 60% of the rental and they rent it out about 100 days a year @ 135 bucks a day,the wear and tear items and insurance comes out of your net, but if you figure the you only need it 6-10 a year , you can write it off your taxes and the rental can pay the payment and you can have it for you weekends that you neen it, and if it's not rented you can use it anytime, but you are lock in a 1 year contract, if might be something to look into, good luck .if you are interested in this service I can look them up for you they are located in central phx, just pm me and I'll see what I can do
Regardless of cost, it's almost like comparing an apartment to home ownership. It's yours when you need it and you'll have years of enjoyment.

I might just take you up on that:D Are you renting it directly or through a service? Can it fit 2 full size quads in the back?
My quest on this has lead me to focus on two key points.
1. I'm flat out pissed off that I can't store it at my house. I have a RV gate into my backyard and a $4000 concrete slab to park it on. But my HOA says I can't have anything taller than the block wall. Total BS.
2. I can't justify the costs using it just myself. At most I only see myself using it 4-5 times a year. I think the key would be to find someone to go in halfs with me. With all the costs cut in half it becomes well worth it.
