View Full Version : Improve performace
I am interested in finding out anyone who owns a motor home what you may have to to improve mileage and basic performace, mine runs great but unloaded or loaded it gets about 6mpg, thats common I understand, however if I can get it to lets say 8-9 thats significant improvement.. I am able to drive all speed limits with no problems at all, but I drive about 60-70 since I seem to get a bit better fuel economy... Ford E-450 V10 Triton

This was a dealer recomendation at $2369.00
PowerPack System
CLASS-A and -C MOTORHOME: Although the 6.8L V-10 Triton has two more cylinders than Ford's discontinued 7.5L V-8, its nominally 10% smaller capacity makes optimal engine efficiency critical to power production. If there's one thing Banks engineers know, it's that engine airflow is the key to efficiency and power. That expertise earned Banks the record for World's Fastest Motorhome: a PowerPacked Ford 6.8L V-10 Class-C Chinook that blasted past General Motor's record at 99.7 mph! Banks' stainless-steel PowerPack unleashes best gains of +53 hp, +69 lb-ft torque, and 7% better mileage.
Looks like at 7% mileage increase, that's still not going to get you anywhere near 8 or 9. A buddy of mine had a V10 moho- 29' Class C with a slide, if I remember. He bought a 34' Class A (new) with the 8.1L Chevy and Allison- says it gets 2-3 mpg BETTER mileage, and pulls the hills a LOT better. He pulls a 20' enclosed with it, and had just a 16' flatbed open trailer when he had the V10, and says it's still noticeably better.
So, I realize that doesn't help you much, and certainly can't be done for $2,400...
I think I'd try a Superchips programmer, an intake and exhaust system, if you wanted to do it incrementally, or just try the Banks.
I've got a 99 V-10 pickup myself- most people tell me that the "older" V10s are guzzlers, and there's not much you can do about it...
Good luck though.
Thanks AZ350, I talked to a dealer about it andhe was impressed I was getting that much already.
I had a 99 F250 with the 275hp V10. I added a Borla exhaust system(headers, y pipe, cat-back) and a K&N air filter. My towing mpg did increase about 1.5 mpg. Normal driving mpg didn't change much at all. What was nice was the power gains. It was very noticable. The Banks system is top notch. I would recomend it. You will probably never pay for it in fuel savings but your rig will pull much better.
Always drive with the wind! Huge increase in mileage if you can pull it off!

The thing to remember when upgrading the power of your engine is that your tranny is only setup for a certain amount of power/torque.
My friend has a 2000 Ford Class C with the V10. He did a bunch of upgrades getting more power only to have his tranny fail. It cost him another $2500 to upgrade the tranny. Now he has over $4000 invested to get what he wants, but he'll never recoup the investment in fuel economy savings, but he goes up the hills much faster! and that makes him smile!
Thanks Brian, I have no issues with my poewr, I dont care to upgrade that, at the moment Im fine with it but I just want 2MPG more, it is so significant on overall cost to go anywhere.

Free flow airfilter and exhaust, super chip tuner, synthetic lube in rear end - trans - and engine, drive like you have an egg between your foot and the gas pedal, keep it at 65 on the flat and 55 in the hills, and drive farther down the road (ie drive so that you are coasting to slow rather than braking). The other biggie is to keep your tires inflated to the maximum based on weight. The combination should come close to the desired effect on your milage.

See if MSD makes an Ignition coil booster for your engine. The plan is to incraese the amps going to the spark plug, to burn all fuel entirely. You will need to get the best available plug wires on the market and the best plugs wouldn't hurt either !!...
