OK, I took my toy hauler title down to the good ole' DMV today. What a fun f'ing time that was. The crowd there, reminded me of the return line at Walmarts, the day after Christmas!!! (quote from Larry the Cable Guy, but it fits perfectly)
Here's my scenerio... The dealer said I should pay about $150 for plates. The lady at DMV fiddled around forever trying to find my make/model/year in her NADA book. She came back with $360 for plates. A far cry from what the dealer said it should cost.
I was registering a 2005 Carson Toy Hauler. They looked up the weight at 7000 lbs gross (it's actually 10,000 lbs)
My question is, I would think the dealer does this enough where they should know a pretty close registration cost, $150 vs $360 is quite a difference. (I paid the $360. At least I got my plate & tags) Did I get incorrect info from the dealer or did MVD screw up???? Either way, I won't be surprised, I'd just like to know.
All of our haulers are somewhat close in weights, are probably fairly new & cost about the same range. What do you think ???? Thanks

The plate registration is based on the value of the trailer, so the $360 is the correct amount. I am curious as to why the dealer didn't handle the registration?

Thank you, Arizona Griz. Here's my story.
Well, I bought my Carson hauler at Mr Trailer Sales On Deer Valley Road & 19th Ave. I checked other dealers (Tucson & out of state) & Mr Trailer was the best price, by a bunch . The old saying is true, the lowest price isn't always the best value. Well, they do not do registrations and my walkthrough & intro was less than spectacular. I ended up calling the factory for several things that where not covered in the owner's manuals & I needed clarification.
Bottom line, I am extremely happy with my new toy. I also feel the dealer could have done a helluva lot better job at handling the situation. I got a great price, but I also paid a price....

I went there to check on a Cargo Trailer, I told them that so and so was cheaper would you match it. They said you better go there and get it our price is what it is take it or leave it, so I left it. I went over to Deer Valley Trailers down the street and got a better one for the same price, in my opinion I wouldn't go back to him because they were rude, and Deer Valley Trailers explained alot and they were polite. Just my 2cents worth. Stay away from Yogi
I agree with you.
I had the ability to get my trailer with perm tags even though it it rated at 10k. I believe you can get perm tags if you register under 6999 lb

If you got your toy hauler with permanent tags it was a mistake by DMV. Toy haulers are not listed like flat bed trailers which can have permanent tags if they are listed under 6000 GVW. Consider yourself very lucky and hope you don't get pulled over. It doesn't matter if they, DMV, made a mistake or not. It is your responsibility to have the correct tags on your trailer.
Maybe i should of said it wasnt a toy hauler it was a 28" popup,my bad. It was a popup and I got perm tags for it which at the time they offered me perm tags of it was under 6999. That one is gone quote:Originally posted by Arizona Griz

Actually it is quite nice. I'm very happy with it. It's a standard toy hauler. I included a generator & fuel station (very nice)& pull down queen bed.
I added a pioneer stereo myself(sounds dam good!), but it came pre-wired, so not much to mess with wiring.
Pulls very good (except when a semi passes). Overall, I'm quite pleased.
I bought my Carson Toy Hauler from Mr. Trailer sales in January of 2004. They filled out the paperwork for the registration. They listed it as a van/trailer and I got permanent tags for it. I would have to agree with you though, the service is lacking. I am very happy with the trailer though.

Actually, to get permanent tags, the the declared registered weight is 5,999 lbs or less. This is not a problem, unless you are over declared registered weight and get pulled in to be weighed. If you are over weight, the fines can be substantial.
(Yes, the law does require you to submit to be weighed if stoped by an LEO, in fact you can be required to go to the nearest weigh station up to 2 miles away to be weighed. I am a truck inspector and a deputy weighmaster. I have brought RVs in to be weighed and cited them for overweight.)
If you have a larger trailer registered at 10,001 lbs, then your tow vehicle must be registered at the weight for both units. (For example, a large semi-truck trailers are registered for 10,001 lbs whle the tractor is registered for 80,000 lbs)
Also, if you have a small trailer that is used for commercial purposes, it CAN NOT be legally registered for the 5,999 permenant plate. We write a lot of companies citations for improper registration on their small trailers.

I have a Tent Trailer Pop Up and it doesn't have Perm Tags.
Mine doesn't either. You can't get permanent tags for tent trailers, unless DMV makes a mistake.

I was told at the DMV, if a trailer has beds and bathroom it can not be issued permant tags.
