I lost my dove hunting spot for the last 25 years to a new housing development in Queen Creek[:0]. Jeff & Jeff Jr are looking for a new place to go, any suggestions or can we join up with your hunt would be cool.

You could get away with it with a slingshot, or maybe even a BB gun.
A 12ga wouldn't work out to well though.:D

Jeff and Jeff, I am scouting a few spots in the next week. I will let you know what I find. If it is good I will shoot you a pm. When quail comes around I do a lot more than dove.

Hey Jeff. I've never hunted dove before. Something I've always wanted to do. When does the season open?

make sure you bring you boys. They'll get a kick out of dad missing soooooooooo many shots !!!!. Jeff Jr did until he actually hunted them himself. Then he saw how f'ing tough those little birds were to shoot!

If you want to dove hunt anymore you practically have to migrate to Florence! It sucks...

I hunted pheasants up in No Cal a few years back. Private club, they set the birds out in advance. First bird up, I knocked down. I had always heard about how hard it was to shoot pheasant. I'm thinking....this was hard? Missed the next 10 shots... Beginners luck! At least I ate pheasant that night!

Ron, bring the boys on a dove hunt! It'll get them a taste of bird hunting. I'm not sure where I'm going on this years dove hunt. I'd love to join up with you, (but in case we don't) I bet there are other RA members that would be willing to offer you a opportunity to hunt dove with your boys. Whatever you do, get the boys out there for the hunt!!!!!!!!!!
It's a kick in the ass hunt that Jeff & I remember every year

Probably won't happen this year. Don't you have to go opening day and that's about it? My weekends are pretty full for a while and don't have any vacation time during the week. I'm assuming I would have to buy another gun as well. Just have the 12 gauge.
In the mean time, I'll hone my skills with the kids BB gun and the neighbors cat! [:0] (kidding...just kidding...or not)

I haven't been hunting since I moved down here. Do you guys use dogs? I have one that's good, and one that's learning, but if it's not too "snakey" they would have a blast (and make retreiving easier). Let me know either way, I'd like to get back into the game.

I've already taken Sept 1-2 off from work. Myself and a friend have4 a good spot that has been productive 1st and 2nd hunts. It's westside and has even produced Quail and the occasional duck. Dirk, it's still a little too "snakey" for a dog, but 2nd hunt is usually colder and the snakes are down for thier huibernation.

My spot was closed last year... It was along the Hunt Hwy.
I had limited success last year at a different spot. I'm willing to link up with others. Scouting for dove is a PITA, since you gotta be in position to watch them before sunrise.... and like Taylor said, Florence is about it.

I don't like dove hunting as much as quail. I like to walk and hunt rather that sit next to 20 other guys along a canal and wait for them to fly over.
The spot I have in mind for dove is a little pond, need to check and see if it has water in it.
matt
Jeff,
Joe and I have a pretty good spot. We've been going there for the last 6-8 years and limit (me) 60-70% of the time. I'll check it out this week to see if its still open.
If not, we'll be looking for a place also!!!
Quail would be great....let's find a good place. Last one I had was north and west of Wickenburg.

As fast and as good as you may be, you're not "dodging" buckshot. First of all, dove hunters don't shoot "buckshot". Second, you're not that fast[:0][B)]
Third, the season ends 9/15 at 1 minute past noon.

Yup, 1oz shot does not hurt that bad anyway. Will just sound like rain drops on your helmet.

well, that was just a figure of speech. It looked like they had shotguns, what do they use for ammo?
I came "flying" down through a section in Desert Wells, and thought my bike was "BACK FIRING"!!!!!

good choice they were most likely using a 12 or 20 gauge. I shoot a 12 gauge with number 8 shot. I have been peppered before and it is not fun. Quail season starts in the beginning of October.

Cousin glenn,
It's "birdshot"....generally number 7 1/2 or 8. Ya probably don't need to worry none, if'n you're skinny. If'n you got a lot of meat on your bones, be careful outta thar[:0]
Sincerely,

Yeah.....later in the season we sometimes start using 6's when they are flying higher (when all of the dumb, low flyers have been shot[xx(])

Can't wait for October.

We got 30 dove today (for four of us). Our area got pounded with rain yesterday late afternoon & the birds were not flying as much this morning, as yesterday. Still a great time!!!!! Any good dove recipes would be appreciated!

Last night I put them in a baking pan with liquid smoke and soy sauce then put bacon over the top. Cooked them on the bbq for about 20 minutes.
I also cook them in bbq sauce. Either way they are very good eating.
