"You sure are fast, you where flyin' when I passed you"
After reading the slam the owner of Whiplash wrote about Arizona Trail Riders that only had half truths in it I would never ride a Whiplash race!
2002 Black EXC 400 (Me)
2002 300 EX (SlowToGo)
2001 XR 80 (BrattyBoy)
1998 Polaris 400 Sport(For Sale)
1998 SX 125 (Crazyguy)
1996 DS 80 (Kyle)
Are we going to talk or are we going to ride????
Where was that slam Mark? I would like to read that.

Well, I certainly can echo the concerns about that organization's treatment of a fellow racing organization in their publication.
However, I (as a member of Arizona Trail Riders) personally feel that it is important that fences be mended. There is way too much politics and adversity facing our sport already. Putting on succesful events requires a lot of hard work and jumping over hurdles. We can't afford not to work together as organizations when others outside our sport are working to put us out of business altogether.

EXCmark,
Actually I hear Jay published something in the effect of an apology due to that fact that the trash his people hauled off that weekend was supposed to have been picked up by someone AZ trailriders contracted with or something like that. I also know that one of his gripes is the way the BLM, Forest service, etc. sees and deals with his group differently. Partly, I am sure due to the fact that he puts alot of people, like 10,000 or so (including non-racing participants) at Snowflake for instance, onto the same land that other groups put maybe a few hundred.
I understand that there is always some politics in racing and ALWAYS between different orgizations and those that race them but to not particpate in any race (and this one in partilar, one of the biggest races in the S/W) is a pretty big personal sacrifice man! That organization is FULL of great people and full of great racers that are no different than any other riders. I hope you don't see this as me defending Jay's comments or actions, I just thought I would lend my perspective. If you do decide to race you are welcome to pit with me in return for introducing me to some AZR events.
I think NEWRIVER has a very good outlook on what is important to focus on. We have plenty of outside groups looking to do damage to our sport and limit our ability to enjoy what we live for without us dismantling it from the inside.

I just sent an E-mail to Whiplash. I haven't heard anything about the race in Prescott.
They scheduled it for June-21,22.
I very seriuosly doubt it because of the fire dangers, but it be nice to have some kind of info posted on their web site.

They may not let you ride anything but the 900 class.
A Pro rider came down from California not to long ago (Snowflake last year), and he had to fight not to ride the 900 class.
The 900 class by the way is the "first time racers" class. It usually has a very big turnout.

I used to run a 15/44 combo on the CR500 at Snowflake cuz it was so fast, my KX is faster and better equiped than the CR ever was but I think I'm run a slower gear combo. Just in case I start thinking I'm as good as I was

I used to run 15/42 on my 500 in Snowflake and Mexico. I run 15/44 on my YZF because it won't pull anything higher.
Run what you're comfortable with. Start out with 15/46. That is still some pretty fast top speed.
I use that gearing most of the time.
In the 900 class you may not need that much unless you want to prove a point.

Not to prove a point, but I am running a 15/45. I think the bike is fast / quick enough that with that gearing in a "beginner" class - right, some of those guys are fast - I can run in the front and not have tax the engine. But then again... domination will get me outta the 900 fast

My feelings exactly. Though I think I learned alot from the CR and the way it was set up, and I've gotten older and had some time think about it, and man oh man I shoulda bought that damper before that race .
This bike is setup much better than the CR, this one is correctly sprung, has a damper, the frame has actually been cut and the head angle changed from 27.5 to 30.0 degrees for stability at speed. This thing is awesome.
Not to downgrade how good the CR was, it just wasn't this good.

Robby Naughton WAS FLYING.
Raper had a hard time taking that second. He is not a graceful loser.
I started on the first row, and when Robby went by me the visibility was so bad from the dust that he went right on a left turn.
He almost hit a tree. When he recovered I never saw him agian. He passed Dayton on the last lap, and Raper was on a 650!
Matt Murphy did the same exact thing to him the year before.
Dayton's on the 5-honey this year, and he has assured me that he WILL WIN.
I may ride Daytons WORCS bike since my 400 is in pretty bad shape. Been a while since I've been on the BIG 500, but It's like riding a bicycle.

He was all geared up to do the series with Price Racing. He even had a new bike built just for the series, but Price ended up not resigning with Kawasaki for the 2002 series so he got left out on his tushy.
He did do the first race in Speedworld. He had the flu, and ended up not doing the Sunday Pro race.
He did the Open Expert Race on saturday and finished in the top 5 with the big boys.
I did the team race with him, and we got third or fourth. I can't remember which. He would definately done better with a faster teammate, but he didn't seem to mind.
We had a blast, but his wife had to carry him to the car and take him home. He was wiped from the bug.

Whiplash is the name of the orginization that holds the desert races in Arizona.
Right now desert racing in Arizona is at a stand still because of the fire restrictions.
The Snowflake race is the most popular, and funnest race of the year. It is held on the first weekend of September every year.
They have scheduled a race in Prescott on July-21/22, but it most likely won't happen.
The best way to start racing in Arizona is to grab a Southwest Offroad News magazine at your nearest bike shop, turn to the middle pages, fill out the regestration and send it in.
If you've never raced with us before they will enter you in the "900" class, which is the first time racers class. After the race they compare your times with ALL classes and determine what class you would fall into.
The "900" class is great because there is no pressure. You can ride as fast or as slow as you want. It's like an extra long trail ride where you don't have to stop and wait for your friends.
Check it out. It's a blast.
Send me a P.M. if you have any more questions.

Please only put water in there. The celebration beer is only for AFTER the race.
I always drink a ton of water right at the finish before anything else. You never know what can send you over the edge.

El Gato,

PS: Corona? Both you guys realize that is what beer is supposed to look like when you are done with it, right? Negra Modela is for the descerning Offroad head. I will have to hook you guys down with one post race. Speaking of post race, we always stay Sunday night and have a big feista after the SF race. Beers, steaks, inflated stories about how many guys we lapped and how we rode the whole powerline section pinned in fifth. The more the merrier!

I was at one of those post race celebrations last year With Ken Kozlick and freinds. Kinda hard to celebebrate all night when you've raced your bum off all day.
All I wanted to do was sleep. We usually stay at the Super-8 in Heber and hit the spa sunday night.
We have reservations there for this year, that is if it is still standing after this fire rages through Heber.
