For those who haven’t taken this route this year:
The US Forest Service no longer maintains the upper part of the route
due to budgetary constraints. The Forest Service in Crown King calls it an Un-maintained Class 5 route. Translation: Its a fun ride, but I do suggest body armor and bike armor. You will get to bottom your shocks plenty of times and the trail often disappears due to rock slides from the monsoon. I ate it a few times going over boulders on a part of the trail that had seen better days. If you want to get around some of this you can switch from the trail to SR 191 about half way up. That also lends to some beautiful scenery and an interesting trip through mines back in the hills. Everyone in our party had a rough ride. Everyone ate it. Everyone loved the ride...once we had arrived at the Crown King Bar![8D]
