It's time to retire the 30-06 (over 70 years old) and pick up a new rifle. I have been looking at the new 300WSM as I like the ballistics that I have seen. I have read all the writeups that the big guys have written but would like to hear if anyone actually has used one. Recoil doesn't bother me so I'm not worried about that but more interested in actual day to day use hunting. So if there is anyone out there that shoots that caliber I would appreciate your comments.
Thx

I don't have a .300WSM but I have recently obtained a new .300 Winchester Magnum but have yet to shoot it. The ballastics, I believe, are very similar to the WSM. I plan on using mine for Coues deer with 150 grain bullets sighting the scope in for 300 yards.

I would have preferred a Remington 7MM Ultra-mag though but I won the .300 so it will work.

Terry; I haven't reloaded in years but have been thinking about starting again just to pass the time. If you could either pm me with the info or just post it I would appreciate it. I haven't gotten the rifle yet. Have to wait until the other half isn't looking.

My dad has that gun and he picked up a coues deer from 350 yards. he was using 150 grain bullet but it seems to be a great gun. i like it better than the 30-06 that i was using and missed 4 times before i got mine.

This is what i have so far.
180 Grain Hornady SST / 62 Grains H4831SC.
I started with 60 and went to 69 grains and found the best with this load, have not chronographed yet, have tried 296 powder with not to much luck measured bullet depth and all the normal stuff.
Need more info?

Thanks for the info Terry and will log it into my notebook. Wally world has a 300WSM in a Winchester model 70 with a Simmons scope for $400.00 and the fat guy in the red suit is coming fast. Maybe the he will leave one this year. The real trick is in getting drawn just to go hunting anymore.

It's a blued version with a synthetic stock so you don't have to worry about the wood. I prefer stainless but at that price I can live without it. Just have to get the oil and cleaners out a little more often.

"have tried 296 powder with not to much"

Unless things have changed in the last few years, 296 is a mag. handgun powder, WAY to fast for a 300 WSM (unless you're making low-power target rounds).

I used Winchester 296 when I reloaded for my Thompson Contender 357 max mag. Out of a 10 inch barrel it put on a nice fire show. It worked good but had a tendency to burn out the barrel but sure was fun to watch at night.

Doug, have you looked at the 300 Rem ultra mag? It shoots a little flatter and pack a bit more punch at the longer yardages.

From the people that I have talked to at the gun shops up here they don't see a future for the ultra mag. They are almost sure that the 300 WSM is going to be around for a while and ammo will be more available for it. Only time will tell but hate to have a rifle that you can't get ammo for. Thanks for the input though.
