We were at Hayfield Draw today ( went there from the Mayer Fire Dpt. Poker Run) and have ridden there a few times. Go north on I-17 past the turn off to Prescott to the Verde Valley exit. Once you exit you will hit highway 260. Turn left and go about 5 miles to get to the Hayfield Draw OHV park. If you go right at highway 260 there are hotels right there. FYI it's still pretty warm up there, high 90's.

Hey Thanks for the info - I am wondering - do you have any detailed directions to the Cherry Trail from there? I booked a hotel in Cottonwood - best rate I could find so I am sure it will be a nice trip - we are going up Friday night 9/5 - ride a little - go to the hotel - swim - eat - get up early and try to ride a few hours before it is too hot.

When we were there riding it seemed like the wash/trail just kind of kept going until you hit the road to Cherry. We rode all the way down to Cherry even though at the time the quads were not street legal. Next time I won't have to keep looking over the shoulder for the law dogs.... Fun road to do some great power slides on[}:)]

It would have been the wash shown in the map that was posted, heading out of the park south.

Hey - that is great! Thanks. I just like to have all the information possible before i go somewhere - not very adventurous I guess. Hotel - Maps - but Im the mom - so i guess its okay.
Was the wash real sandy? Or solid?

The wash was actually quite rocky. It is your usual AZ desert wash. There are some rocks to dodge - the kind that smack the underside of a quad real good if you don't avoid them. The trail that goes back to the Cherry road is really pretty - some nice scenery going through trees - this part I believe is actually out of the park boundries. This is not a very big area, but fun to spend 5-6 hrs. cheking out. Nice staging area with bathroom and loading / unlaoding area. Small MX track that is fun. Was very dusty when we were last there, make sure you have googgles.
Have fun, don't over heat - still very hot during the day there.

Thanks for the information - we all ride dirtbikes - 3 that are 4 stroke - 1 that is a 2 stroke that one of my son's friends is bringing - so we will watch the overheat on that for sure - rocky is better than sandy for me - i just dont have the upper body strength for all that sand - we are really excited to be going.

Your maps and infor were a great help - we arrived at the OHV area about 5pm Friday and rode the tracks for about an hour before we had dinner and went to bed - What a great area!! How do we get one of those down here? Saturday I rode for about 2 hours, the "Men" found the wash and rode all the way up the mountain to the rode to Cherry - a big storm was coming in so they high tailed it back and we drove up in the truck so I could see where they were - next time Im riding all the way. My little 80 loves the sand, but my arms need to get used to it. The high was 71 degrees - GLORY!! My lungs were thrilled to breathe cool air!! The boys were so excited and were sure it was COLD. We look forward to another trip up there in 2 weeks.

I do not believe so. If you keep going west there is a MX track on the north side of the road. I think that is the verde valley motorplex. This area is marked Hayfield Drae OHV on all the signs.

Right - the motoplex looked liked maybe they have rides at night, but we didnt get to see that part. The Hayfield Draw OHV is just about a mile further out from cottonwood and has like 4 trail tracks - an area just for kids, hill climbs, and then washes to ride down - it is GREAT!

If you have't aleady done it and you want a excellent ride at Hayfield, take trail 545 out of the wash and just stay on it until you cross the wash again and continue the trail to Cherry Road. It is a fast, tight & twisty, with lotsa whoops and just a plain fun trail. From there you can continue to Copper Basin Road and take that up to the top of Squaw Peak where the radio towers are. We staged an RA ride out there and did that very ride.

Last time I was at Hayfield I was with Joe and a landowner stopped us from getting all the way to squaw peak. I can't remember what the trail number was that we came off of, but it was just as we got back on to Cherry Rd. about 8 miles from squa peak. I put up a post about this a while ago. I do not know if the landowner is still causing problems or not.

We are going this weekedn 9/19-9/21 - that trail sounds good. I hear there are some mines off the road at the top of the wash - we plan to check that out too. Thanks again for the information.

I have been thinking of taking the family up here. Is the "tot lot" a good place for the little kids on 50's? Is it a very big area or would it be really tight for them? Any good camping areas close by? Thanks for any info.

The tot lot is pretty good sized, enough room for them to cruise around. There is not any camping in the OHV area, it is posted day use only. I am sure there is lots of places to camp that are close by. Cottonwood and camp verde are not very far away.

I guess that landowner is REALLY out of control - I'd get the bomb disposal unit to take care of that first...[^]

Nuge,
I have not found anything to radical, but friendly hill is pretty tough for the two wheelers and sport quads. It has a right hand turn in it exactly when it gets steep. The last time I was up there, about a month ago, there was also a big rock right in the middle at the very top. One guy I was with said he had never made it up on a two wheeler. The area is very fast with some cool whoop sections, I can get my Polaris 700 air born on. Have fun

Just got back from trying Hayfield, and we had a great time. My friend and I brought our families down there and spent two days in the area. We brought the 50 for the s, my wife's trail boss, by friends heavily modified glamis banshee, and my predator. The area was great for the kids and wifes with the different areas to ride. The banshee was great on the hill climbs. Overall the area is not too bad at all. I am curious if anyone knows of any other areas set up similarly. I do not mind paying if it keeps up the area for people like us. I had no idea this place existed until I read about it in RA
22 years or riding in AZ.

We also loved Hayfield Draw - and Cottonwood!!
Last time we went to Alto Pit - it has an open area, a tot ring, a beginner trail, and then trails all around it at all levels. Best of all - PINE TREES!! Or maybe it was the bathrooms [:I] - Alto Pit is West of Prescott. Our next goal is Camp Wood!
We also found out about all these areas here on RA, as well as some other great places to ride. Thank you RA!!

Don't follow David. There must be an easier way.
I ride a two-wheeler and I have made friendly hill every time. It's EXTREMELY tough on two-wheels, but I can do it--a four stroke thumper is the ticket, although I have seen it done on a smaller CC 2 stroke.

Next time anyone is planning on heading to Hayfield, send me a PM. I have trails directly from my house straight there. Always lookin for more people to ride with. I've been out maybe 3 times, but there's plenty of trails to explore.
