Can anyone tell me how the taxes are typically handled when buying a toy hauler from out of state? I have spoken to a couple dealers in Vegas and seem to be getting some great prices. Any help is appreciated.

Bring all your paperwork to Arizona DMV they look in a book

I do think it is based on MSRP

If you buy in California but live out of state you can do an "Out of state delivery". This means you follow or meet a driver who has your hauler at the state line. There you will do final signatures and notarise. Thats it. This will all be handled by a good dealer, if you need anything i used to work in Ca at RV dealers and still have contacts. They do out of state deliveries all the time. There are restrictions on taking the unit back to Ca after purchase.

I bought my Weekend Warrior this way. I then went to DMV and paid the Arizona State Sales Tax when I got the registration. The surprise was when the City of Mesa called me and wanted their share, since that is where I live, after a couple of months. I wasn't quite prepared for that.

Ariz Griz, sounds weird that City of Mesa called and collected. I purchased a brand new Boat Trailer last year in NY to Transport my sailboat to PHX. I dragged it from NY to AZ behind my Jeep. Once I got to PHX all I had to do was get it inspected, went inside and paid STATE Sales Tax Only. I've had it since a year ago June and the City of El Mirage never contacted me.

I think it was 5 or 6% State Tax Rate. Cost me $130 for the tags and another $65 in taxes if I remember right.

First, as I live near Sun City and buy a lot of stuff there...there is tax in Sun City. It is lower than the surrounding areas because there is no CITY sales tax, but there is still state and county sales tax.

Now, on to the real question. I have bought our last two fifth wheels from Giant RV in California. The firt one I had them deliver to Az, so I took possesion here and paid no tax at the time of possession. I paid my sales tax when I registered it at the DMV. The more recent trailer I went and got it in California. Since I took possession there, I paid sales tax there (fortunately it was basically the same as Glendale sales tax). When I registered the trailer, I was not charged any additional sales tax.

My other suggestion is to simply ask the dealer. If they have good prices, then they probably attract a lot of out-of-state buyers, so they should have plenty of experience dealing with the matter.

Hope this helps.

There is a law that allows the city you live in to collect sales tax as if you purchased the vehicle in that city if you purchased the vehicle in an area that does not collect city sales tax. I know Mesa aggressively pursues this, as I bought my enclosed trailer out of state and got a bill from Mesa about three months after I registered the trailer.

I don't how well other cities track or enforce this.

The City Tax collecting process also happened when a friend of mine went to street legal his quad that he bought in New Mexico. After a while the City of Chandler called and wanted their cut.

What happens when you buy in a state with no sales tax...then bring it home 30 days later?

Or, in a no sales tax state, use an agent (straw buyer) to buy then buy it used [:p]

*Note! Use of a straw buyer to avoid or circumvent the collection of sales tax may be illegal[xx(] The above post is for entertainment purposes only[:p]:D

This is a different subject on the sales tax, but what about the lisc tags. Does anyone realize when you bought your 5th wheel or even a tow behind camper that you had to pay the same on tags that you do your car. I am so confused with Az. We had a cabin cruiser 28' boat, tags for the trailer were perm and not much at all. We have a 05 5th wheel and just got the renewal for $712.00. OUCH. My problem and Im sure many is it does not run on the road with gas or deisel and it is attached to the truck and we as Im sure many of us does not have it on the road every day or every other day like a car. I want to complain to the state but dont know where to start. Any suggestions? Think about it Governor to give discounts on fuel saving vehicles for your tags well isnt a 5th wheel fuel savings, IT HAS NO FUEL:

Even though the state refers to this charge as a Vehicle License Tax, you can consider it a Property Tax. In my eyes, any tax that is figured on the value of the object being taxed is a property tax.

Your boat trailer was cheap to register, because the trailer is not worth $10K. I've never owned a boat, but I'm guessing when you get your registration number for it, there is some fee you have to pay? Another property tax by a different name.

Since you don't pay sales tax on private party sales (as in used), you need to find a Nevada "relative" buy the trailer and then buy it from them the next day [:p]
