I am planning my first trip to the dunes. I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on paddle tires. Should I get them or not? I currently have Dirt Devils and was wondering how much of a difference paddle tires would make. Also, since it is out of state, what are the requirements (permits, equipment)?
Thanks for any info.

I think that if you want to really enjoy the dunes you should have paddles for sure! I am running Skat-Trac Haulers on both my bikes. I wouldnt use anything but those, but thats just a personal opinion.

Also you will need to have your helmet for sure, It is like an $80 dollar fine for not wearing a helmet. When you to the dunes there will be a pay station where can purchase a pass for the weekend or for the season.
I just got back from Glamis lastnight and the temperature is almost just right. It was a great time.

I just picked up a set of Sand Stars. I haven't had a chance to try them out. They weight about 4 pounds less a tire that a Sand Shark. The new season pass for the Imperial Dunes is now 90 dollars, an increase from last years 30 dollars.

I have ridden the Haulers, and the Sand Geckos. Both are great paddles, but I preferd the Sand Geckos because they turn. The Haulers do awesome in a straight line, but when you turn the a$$ end wants to slide out. The Geckos are more predicable all the way around.

You will need flags as well. My first trip out I had dirt devils on my warrior and let the air out of them, was able to get around Ok, i got Sand Geckos now and don't sink or get stuck AT ALL.
Get paddles if you plan to go often.

Trust me, for your quad the sand sharks or similar paddles are to big and will slow you down, get the new ITP Sand Star Tires. Also a suggestion, take your normal tires, deflate them and try them for a couple of rides on the sand as well just to see if paddles are really worth it!

Well i have used sharks geckos skate 1's and 2's. Also some 8 "bladed?" straight paddles. The geckos were the best performers for the price.
But if you get hooked on Bombing up the hills and duning comes secondary at that point those straight paddles can't be beaten. In my opinion that is.

I think the magazine Dirt Wheels may have a web site. Do a Google search and you'll come up with their site. They have an area for previous issues. Some time last year, they did a test on every known paddle tire. You might get what you're looking for there. If you can't find it, PM me, I have the article at home. For the most part straight paddles are better for racing up hills, the V shaped type paddles are better for sliding and turning fast. I run STU Sand Skate II's and would not use another tire for the type of duning I prefer. The traction is superb and they are able to change directions quickly without hooking up. Also, wheel width is very important when running paddles. The STU's are meant to be on a 10" wheel. Always make sure your quad can handle the paddles since they require a little more HP than your normal tires that came with your quad. On some bikes, paddles will actually be worse since the quad doesn't have enough power to turn them properly. Also, when buying wheels, buy a light wheel (ITP, Douglas, etc.) unless you are going to be into extreme jumping. You'll require a heavier wheel with possible bead locks if you're doing that. The STU's I talked about were also the choice of many pros who did the dirt wheels test.

What I did my first time out to the dunes was rented a set of paddle tires. Most shops rent them for about $30 to $40 bucks for a weekend, Pickup and Friday and return on Monday. This will give you the chance to tryout your tires vs paddles. My first time out I Rented Haulers and my second time out I rented V shaped paddles. I now own geckos, best of both worlds.[8D]
I was just by Kenz Cycle Tech today and he has the Sand Stars in stock, lots of them and they were on sale. He also had the new ITP Mag rims. If you head in his direction be sure to take a coupon with you...it can be found in the Discounts section.

I've had good luck with both SandScate IIs (400EX) and GBC Sandsharks (C-dale Glamis). A buddy tried Gecco's with his raptor and did worse in hill shoots than with his stock tires.

I was at Ogilby today with some buddies with Raptors. One had Sandscates and the other Geccos. Otherwise the bikes were pretty much the same. The sandscates dominated at Patton Valley hill shoots. Back at camp we switched tires between the bikes and repeated the experiment. The sandscates dominated again - now on the other raptor. We didn't expect such a dramatic difference between these tires. The guy with the Geccos is putting them on e-bay when he gets back. FYI.

Forgot to mention that neither of those bikes had a chance against the Fo Fitty..:D Well, I won my share anyway.
