View Full Version : Help with Munds Park / Oak Creek area
I'll be running up to Munds Park friday to visit Dear ol' Dad and was wondering if anyone has a idea how to get close to the Oak Creek area from Munds Park???? I see a raod to Thompsons Ridge which overlooks Indian Gardens.. Then there's Schnebly Hill which looks like a more developed hill.
Any suggestions?? I'm hoping to be done with my chores with enough time to roam...:D

schnebly hill is an excellent road to the bottom, but you must be street legal i think...or pay a small fee im not sure but ive only rode to the part right before you start going all the way down in..so before that your ok not being street legal

You could ride Moromon Lake Rd. out of Munds to FR 228, connect to FR 226, go under I-17 to FR 153, which is Schenbly Hill Rd., and ride to the bottom to pick up Hwy 179 to Oak Creek. You'll need to be street legal from where FR 153 becomes Schnebly Hill Rd. all the way to Oak Creek. The Red Rocks Fee isn't necessary unless you plan to stop along Schnebley or park at the bottom of it.

Thanks for the info..ORR and GD,,
Looking at the map I can hit the 226 via the 9492D and 226c. That might work.
Is there a off ramp for Schnebly Hill on the freeway?
That way I can stage there so the ride isn't as long if time doen't permit.
My quad is street legal but still wouldn't mind paying a fee for the cause...LOL :D

Schnebly is accessed form the freeway, but the 9492d road is a tricky one you get back in there and the trail is difficult to define as well as the c road also. Have a great time up there.

You can take Exit 320 off I-17, it's the one just before Munds. Once you cross under I-17 heading West, you'll enter the forest. You could find a place to stage there. I don't believe a fee is necessary until you actually get _onto_ Schnebley Rd, which is a couple of miles West of the I-17 exit. The I-17 exit is paved , of course, and the pavement continues under I-17 right up to the FS 153. Probably only 1/8th mile or less of pavement. Look for signs where pavement ends and dirt road begins. If a Red Rocks pass is necessary for the forest portion of the road, there'll be a fee box. I'm _pretty_ sure though that you only pay at the West end of Schnebly or at the Vista overlook on the East side where FS153 becomes Schnebly. And, that's only if you plan to stop or park on Schnebly Hill Rd. itself. Beautiful views. There's a trail off to the left as you head West (153A I believe). It is kinda hard to see but, it cuts back away from the road to the East and then snakes around to the West. This trail will take you right up to the Mogollon Rim with sheer drops. The views are breath taking. The trail is a short one and well worth the trip. It exits back onto 153 at the overlook called Viewpoint. This is where FS 153 becomes Schnebly Hill Rd. Have a great time.

Ive ridden schebly hill and wasnt street legal, weve done it before and i dont think they have a problem with it, but you have to buy the parking pass for the car, Like $5. Just watch for jeeps if your going to do it.
I'm back from Munds Park and found a way across the Freeway and rode around a bit. I didn't get to far but found there are alot of exploreing to do. I ended up taking the ride on Schnebly Hill by Jeep. Looks like lots of area to camp which looked interesting. We went down the hill and drove Broken Arrow which is where the Pink Jeep tours go. I talked to one of the drivers and found quads are permitted to ride that area Lots of rock crawling.. I'll be checking that out this winter when the tourism slows down. You need the red rock permit for sure in there. The permit was required only if you park...LOL So we kept moving.
I also found a mine area between Munds Park and Morman Lake with tall steep hills and loose lava rock. Coundn't play because It was late...Next time.... Thanks all for the responses
