View Full Version : PMP GP Course...

I rode the GP course for next weekends race, this morning. It is extremely flat, and isn't going to be very fast. From what I can tell, the race will start on the MX gate, the run about half the MX track and then off through some bush bashing in extremely silty dirt. This doesn't last very long, then it is a quick wide open straigth and back to bush bashing in silt. This goes on for a while, and quite frankly gets old relatively quick. Once you are out of the bushes, it is a cliff-hanging power line road for about a quarter mile, maybe a little bit longer. Next, you run the off-road truck course in reverse which is basicly just wide open straights and pitched turns. Lastly you are back into some really tight (first gear) bush turns, then back onto the MX track and around again. I'm guessing lap times to be under 5 minutes??? Just putting around with another guy and stopping everyonce and a while we did it pretty quickly.
Unless they cutout the bushes for kids, they will have an awful time in the sand and silt, nevermind the ride along the 6-foot drop-off into the wash that they'd have to ride along.
With just the one bike in front of me I couldn't see farther than three feet. The course is so tight at some points I couldn't get close enough to keep out of the dust. I can't seem them doing any watering either. So, unless it rains like mad sometime between now and next Saturday the GP is going to be one big dust bowl. Of course, this will exclude the MX track sections.
Just thought I share this with those you of thinking about trekking out for the race...so you can be sure to bring some air filter oil.

Last year they said they were going to run the !@#$%^&*! up silty desert section and they ended up cutting it out after numerous complaints, crashes and cactus hits... I ride in this local area all of the time and know that if they plan to do the desert silt run this year they better keep the ambulances coming because they'll need them, lots of them. The first person to reach the desert section wins, period... No one else will be able to see... In addition to a great loss of confidence in future GP's... This is the worst decision I think Jay could ever make in regards to the PMP GP. They should stick to running the FULL MX course and incorporate it with the ENTIRE Quad/truck course for a true GP feel or they can rename it the WHIPCRASH DUST BOWL GP.

By the way, after you all run the practice session and feel the same way I do, it is a good idea to express your concerns to Jay as he is a reasonable person and WILL listen to us. He will do what the majority asks for.

I agree. I think the race would be really fun if they just cut-out the bush bashing. One other thing I'd forgotten to mention was right in the middle of some of the silty sections they dug holes in the ground and built up whoops. Nothing like coming around a corner that you can't see and having your front tire jump straight up. There is one section as soon as you get on the powerline trail where the've put about 20 of these "whoops" together. Pretty funny really.

Just looking at the forecast for the week. If Marty has its way, we could just get that rain. It is looking like it should be up here sometime around Wednesday night. Weather.com is showing a 50% chance for Wednesday and Thursday...

Let me make sure I understand this...
They took a GP track that everyone looked forward to riding and turned it into something no one wants to ride.
I know the 2-wheel guys didn't like the "original GP" track, but us quad guys loved it.
So they've taken a wide-open, fast, bar-to-bar track and turned it into a dusty Alto Pit.
Maybe it will be cool enough this weekend to go to the dunes.

Sounds like a friggin blast to me. I love those old style GP courses. Any body remember the Sierra Vista GP's? The ruts were so deep you had to take your feet off the pegs, and if you didn't have a skid plate you were screwed. This is desert racing people, silt, sand, blind whoops, g-outs are all part of the beast. This kind of race makes you smarter, quicker, and more adapatable to the insane courses they have in Nevada and Cali. It also seperates the men from the boys. Use filter skins, and blast through it.
If all you guys want is perfectly groomed courses with no dust or dangerous stuff you should convert to MX.

Nicely said.
I strongly agree. Even though every race I go to I wish it was groomed, and water like a moto x course. But I don't think I could ever go back to mx. It is the best riding by brail, it makes you ride loose, and focus. If you just want to ride the GP course only you should save your money and race around your block a few times! Whiplash is putting forth the effort to make this a better race, and in my eyes it is, which I think many others would agree.

My opinion is that track conditions reward different riding styles.
Semi-groomed (we do use it after the trucks) courses reward skill, strategy and technique.
Dusty, beat-up courses do reward riders with better fitness, but they more reward riders who are brave (or stupid) enough to hold the throttle down when they can't see.
If I wanted to ride a P.O.S course, I'd sign up for Wickenburg. PMP used to be fun (as opposed to a "test of manhood"). If it turns out to be another P.O.S. GP course like the one at Speedworld, it's a shame.

My biggest concern was whether or not my 9 year old and his kx65 could have a good time on the course, let alone be safe. There is not a doubt in my mind that he would struggle with it, ultimately creating a bad impression of what a GP really is. Now, I have nothing against the challenge of a dusty course if it is POSSIBLE to take a different line (open desert). However the sandy/silty part of the course is one-lined (there won't be any trucks here) from cactus to cactus. I can tell you now, no one not even the guy leading will be able to see the cactus they are suppose to turn on after the first lap. And I am talking about 30 feet from turn point to the next. If there are ten guys per race it might not be that bad...we'll see.
I should say the rest of the course looks awesome! The off-road/truck course will be a blast and really fast.

Kit, did they change the big jump that is near where the start used to be? If we are doing that one backwards, the slopes will be wrong, nice gradual uphill to a 6 foot flat drop.
Thanks for the info (even though I'm a little disappointed)

Absolutely, this would be IN MY OPINION an awesome course. Something more like what you would find in an AMA H&H or BITD course. A lot of people would rather not put themselves through that kind of torture. I've hit my head too many times and I like it for some reason.
quote:If I wanted to ride a P.O.S course, I'd sign up for Wickenburg.
That's just my point exactly, Wickenburg is one of my favorite races in AZ. I love the races that most others don't like Hieroglyphic, Whickenburg, and Prescott. That's just my style. Courses like Snowflake are not fun to me. It's all about who can stay tucked in fifth the longest into the next sweeper. Look at how many more people went to the hospital in SF compared to Hieroglyphic or Whickenburg. I would rather show off my riding skills than the speed of my bike compared to everyone elses bike.
Anyways I didn't mean to affend anyone, sorry if I did.
I hear what you're saying Kit about the young ones. They will need to find a less dangerous route for them.
Good luck all, I wish I could be there especially now, but I can't.

I really wouldn't worry about the kids course. They'll have a different course lined out for them which will be extremely doable. I too like the more challenging courses such as Wickenburg and Heiroglyphic. I came from AMA D-37 Hare Scrambles & H&H, CMC, AME, SRA etc... and can appreciate a well laid out course. My fav is single track and enduro style riding but don't particularly care for racing on power line roads with zero visibility.

I was the other rider that went out on the Sunday Morning eval with Kitplummer. I love the idea of this type of race and what they are trying to do. It gives 3 different types of riders 3 different areas to do better in.
Tight and twisty single track, flat track and MX. Concept is great, I just don't think that the terrain around the PMP track is going to lend itself to a real desert race with a bunch of people.
I guess if you feel that 1st gear, 5MPH, visibility at 5 feet and most likely 80% of the riders won't be able to find the desert portion because of the dust after the first lap is fun, well then you will love it.
Whiplash needs to keep experimenting with different track ideas to keep things fresh, I just don't think the desert section of the GP is going to go over well. Hey just by adding the MX track into the GP will be twice as long of a course as last time. Isn't that a plus?

As for the length of the race. From times before the GP's have been, the leader get the checkers at about 1 hour and then everybody else follows. Although things can always change. I raced the one back in last October but not the one in April.

There is a different setup for this race. There is practice Sunday morning for the quads at 9:30 (I think). No poker fees this time. So you could show Sunday morning if you wanted to. Tech only take a few minutes if your timing is right.

You can checkin and tech on Saturday, but you won't be able to ride on the GP track until Sunday. What I've done in the past is checkin and find out what number you are. Go over to tech and get your numbers (they're free for first time racers). Put them one at your pit and return to tech with numbers on and all your gear.
It really slows down the line when people put their numbers on during tech.

Most racing organizations like to see at least 7" numbers, and 8" if possible.7" numbers is a good size when you have a three digit number, and yes Whiplash gives out 8". But I do think they have some smaller ones, if you get there before they are gone.

Whiplash will SELL you 6-inch numbers, but they don't want to. The 8-inch numbers can be cut down to fit the 7x10 number plates. I have two quads that have changed numbers a couple times recently and I can tell you that the shops around town are poorly stocked with numbers.
I'm using the 6-inch ones because they are the only ones I could find.
Quads are problematic for numbers since the CPSC doesn't want the manufacturers supporting racing. Be creative.

My quad is now finally done, we finally got it finished earlier this week. But we are having some front suspension issues. The frame upper gusset under the shock mount is so big its interfering with tie rod under full compression. Well...I don't think the quad riders can take credit for the weather...but just think how much easier it will be when the weak succomb to the brutal temperatures, and those with superior conditioning can rise to the top and seize victory.
I'm just kidding you guys. I agree that bikes and quads should alternate who goes first.

Hi Ron
It's atleast 2 hours from North Phx, depending on traffic.
You can leave your stuff with us at the track if you like. We lock all the bikes up at night. The track is enclosed anyway, so theft shouldn't be an issue. I'm staying with Robert in his trailer so I'm not in a position to offer you a place to stay. I'm not sure about nearby hotels either.

Thanks Jeff, if I end up flying solo I will crash in my trailer but if wifey comes along then we will most likley get a hotel of some sort I am not so sure she will find the trailer as cozy as I do:D See ya all this afternoon
Ron,
I talked to Robert last night and he said your more than welcome to sleep in his trailer, but you'll be on the floor since we already have one other couple sleeping in there. I gave up the drop down bunk for them. Robert's wife isn't going now, but for some reason he won't let me share his big bed with him. [:p] "Where's your other hand?" say's Robert. Jeff replies, "Between two pillows."
Anyway- I sent you an email to call me at home, but this is what it was about, so disreguard that email. I imagine you're thinking very seriously about a hotel right now though. hehe ;)

I only spectated, didnt race this time, but from everyone I talked, and talked to quite a few quad racers (and some dirtbikes), a lot of them really liked it. Only major complaint I heard was the desert trail part was really narrow and dusty, and there was this thing about a gate or fence that was poorly marked casuing all kind of havic.
And to add one more thing, it was hotter than hell out there.... I felt bad seeing people racing dirtbike in 100 degree weather like that....

I did horrible.
The start said it all. I rolled about 5 feet, and stalled. After that I was in screw it mode. The course was fun, but very dusty. I blew through at least 5 corners my first lap, including the gate. As I was turning around Steve Richards was coming full bore at me. That was feaky. I did get by Mike Parks, and Desi Wolf, which should in 3rd place for the points. So I rode like crap, but the over all picture I did good.
Overall I think the top three was:
Eric Anderson
Dayton Raper/Jones
Richard Birchfield.

Todd,
I arrived at the track about one hour before the race and had to mooch Mike Parks 250 off him. I just wanted to keep the points lead going into the next two races without wadding up Mike's bike. They told me I had to do one lap for some points. If I don't keep the points lead then all that whining I've been doing all year about not racing Vet Pro was for nothing. I couldn't let that happen! And low and behold I'm sitting on the start line(the least nervous I have ever been in my life by the way) and Ben Hutchinson tells me I won the little xr50. She's a beauty!

I really liked the course layout. It was certainly different. The dust was present but not nearly as bad as it could have been. I knew someone would eat the gate on the fenceline but was surprised to hear how many actually piled up on it. I got a great start but toasted my ankle on the finish line jump from flat landing it on the first lap. That really put a damper on the rest of the jumps. It wasn't bad with all of the bikes running at once. Thought it would have been more crowded but the turnout didn't even compare to the Saturday night crowd. Ben, I didn't see you after the race... I wanted to tell you how great your crash looked after you passed me. COUGH COUGH!!! Glad you didn't get hurt. I blew that same turn on my first lap when I couldn't see through Kyle's dust. Oh yeah, thought I was going to puke from the heat... See y'all in Wickinburg. (Isn't that Ken's description of a two hour plane crash)?
Steve Feld #31
Speaking of crash up derby. I got a front row seat to the pile up in the desert section of PMP. I was following close behind Joe Ramose #145 through the white out section of the course when his helmet just disapeard. I was just in the process of shiffting up a gear and bam over the bars! As I was gasping for air off to the side, there must have been twenty or more people piling up on top of eachother. It seemed at the time it would never end one after another over the bars. I was able to get the bike started and headed back out on the track to only find out I had gotten a flat. I think this pile up could have been avoided with good track marking I dont believe there where any arrows indicating a sharp right hand turn. Just my sad story and 2 cents.

The gate that caused all the problems was marked but apparently was knocked open by the Quads and we did not get it closed in time for the bikes as information was scrambled as to location of marking troubles. I loved the course!! It had a little bit of everything. I especially liked the little bumps and jumps in the desert sections....like the 5th grear pinned kicker before turning right and entering the woods to the left. I wrecked alot during the race....rolled the quad 2 times and just mangled a cactus later. I even managed to slide into the ditch(you know the off-camber right hand turn all dusty)during the practice lap. I thought I ended up in third place in the 100 class. I was behind the leader #161 on the 4th lap.....rolled it in a corner and only saw one person pass me......I finished thinking I got 3rd, but I guess there were invisible people out there??........I am wondering if they docked me a place or two for going too fast through a caution flag???....I saw it at the last minute coming up the jump at the finish line on the 3rd lap.......I was already too far to hit the brakes and launched it anyways, since I would have endoed if I hadn't......the accident was way after the flag, and I was slowed in plenty of time after realizing it and avoiding even a close call.....would that look bad maybe and cause a loss of place??

the gate caused us some problems......but i don't think it was near as dangerous as the unmarked right turn that was off camber and everyone slid into the ditch....of course it wouldn't have been half as bad if the dust wasn't so terrible right there. as for the gate, after the first lap, i was saved by whoever was standing beside it and pointing us to the right....he really did save me at least 3 times....it seems the dust would clear and i would see him just in time to turn. i don't think it is anyone's fault though....we did have practice time, and knew these two places were out there....just helps to have those arrows when we are flying!!

Pretty crappy weekend for me:( First off, I knew there would be trouble. While on the practice lap I found myself in the middle of a huge dust storm, then head on into the gate & falling on the cattle gaurd[:0]. Even if it were marked better, no one could see through the dust in that corner.
Now on with the race, Who's idea was it to start the 300 class with the 600's? Sure enough, I start right next to some 13-14 year old kid. He flips his bike on the start, sending he & his bike right in my line. I find myself making that quick decission " Do I run over his head or be the nice guy & stop?" I stopped & had to back up & around this dumb a$$ & now I'm dead last. Next time I think I'll just go for the head-shot[}:)]. I had to pick off 300 class riders left & right through the dust the intire race. I think I may have caught 1 600 rider, but never saw any of my class after that. I beleive I finished 2nd to last and lost the points lead, maybe lost my shot at the 40+ championship as well:(.

Hated it.[xx(]
Loved the course but hated the heat and markings on two corners. I blew the cattle guard on first 2 laps and at Randal's corner 3 times!
I have two teammates that are f***** up because of the pile up. #201 Robert Palmer dislocated 2 fingers and broke a bone on his wrist when he hit the pile and jammed his hand into the cattle guard. And #112 Mike Crawford riding his hours old crf450 went over the bars, got ran into, picked up his bike to have someone else hit his back tire and go over the bars slaming him and the bike to the ground, then 4 people launched over the 450. He was home today with a hamburger forearm and elbo and a hip the size of a basketball.
Phil #611 got really lucky on the pre run.
I couldn't take the heat. I felt like i cooking in my skin and was not having fun. It now appears I have a history of heat problems. Wickenburg 2000 my first race i got heat exh. and almost passed out. My Mommy said when i was a kid i got heat whatever and the Dr. said once you get it you are then more suseptable to it.[xx(] @!*$@!@#!!

I am glad you guys liked the course. The gate that caused all the problems was marked but apparently was knocked open by the Quads and we did not get it closed in time for the bikes as information was scrambled as to location of marking troubles. If you have suggestions for future races at PMP let me know as Jay is letting me do more in that area.
Thanks
PMP Racing Medic
My recommendation is to put in some down arrows next time as well as opening the gate for safety. It wouldn't hurt to have a flagger posted there too. There is one other option: Don't do the above recommendations and just grade a nice smooth road on the backside for emergency vehicles to access that location. LOL

I did not see any of the results. I jumped off my bike, into the car & had to get home.( 80-90 MPH all the way) I just made it to work right on time at 5:00pm[:0] quote:Originally posted by Fistfull
