Has anyone done this ride? I might be doing it tomorrow and would like to know what the difficulty is. Also, do you have to be street legal to do this ride? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Go really fast down that hill. If anything gets in your way, turn.

My wife and I did this ride last weekend. It's a very easy and enjoyable trip. We took Perkinsville Rd. in Chino Valley heading East. Outside town the road turns to dirt and there are some heavy washboard sections but had no problems. At the corral turn right onto 318A. You may encounter cattle and/or horses blocking the road. Road becomes rougher. After you reach the Prescott Forest sign look for a place to stage. There are spots off the side of the trail. The trail has several narrow blind curves so watch for traffic. My guess is that street legal is a requirement, espcecially if you drive around Jerome. We did come across an AZ Game & Fish pickup parked along side 318A with quad ramps extending out the tailgate. But, we didn't see any LEO's and others have said they had no problems in that regard. It's a great, scenic ride and the burgers are fantastic at the Haunted Hamburger. Bunk & Teri have a description of this route in the Trail Guide section.

Your questions kinda depend on which route you're takin'.

You will definately need tags if you plan on ridin into Jerome, but you can park at the outskirts and walk in to town.

Perkinsville Rd is a county rd (#70) from Chino Valley, as is Orchard Draw Rd (#72) from Perkinsville. You should not have any problem though on either of these in re to tags, in fact, #72 is part of the GWT. (Turn left at the jct of #70 and #72 and it is a very short ride to Perkinsville Ranch and the Verde River). This route is a wide maintained and dusty rd.

I would recommend taking the Old Narrow Gauge, FR #318A.
Also an easy route but a much better ride than the main road.

The Great Western Trail over Mingus (Martin Cyn) is a bit more challenging (must negotiate some rather large rocks in the creek bottoms) and incredibly beautiful. This route will dump you out on Hwy 89A a few miles outta Jermome, too far to walk in.
