I have been on the Saffel canyon trail many times. I live nearby. The trail is kind of rocky in spots but beautiful throughout. If your quad is not jetted for this altitude, it will probabaly chug a bit up at the top. The last time I rode the trail was about a month ago. I saw bear tracks all over the trail. I didn't see any bears though. If you have a sharp eye you should see some wildlife. I have seen Deer, Elk, and Turkey all on the same ride.

Have Fun!

I'm intersted in this area for a club ride. I haven't had any luck so far finding a discription of the staging, camping, and trail types. Just being out of the heat thois summer would be enough for me but if I take some folks up there I want them to be able to find a place to put their tents or trailers.

Anybody have any input? Thanks!

High altitude poisoning. Second hand experience dealing with it. Be careful.

Here are some pics to help you out:

The only thing I can say is wait 24 hours before you ride. It will allow your body to acclimate to the altitude change.

Hypoxia is a decreased amount of oxygen concentration and because of high altitudes the concentration is thinner. Your blood needs time to adapt to the altitude. Runners train in like denver to thin thier blood so that when they run a race they do not get fatigued. Shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches.. This can cause brain damage so be careful.

From the link Shannon posted, I'd say that looks like a great place for a camp n' ride sometime this summer.[:p][:p]

It's up by Eager/Springerville. Definitly a beautiful place to ride. There is even a RA Geocache up there.

Hey thanks Shannon and everyone else. I found it on my Topo maps and printed out some huge maps. We may try and make a Rock Stars MC trip up there this summer to just mess around. All are welcome. It won't be an orginized ride or event, just show up and ride around for fun. I'll post if we decide to go.
