Keep the calendars open on February 8, 2004. The Arizona Trail Riders got their enduro back on the AMA schedule next year. Not sure where it will be(probably Lake Pleasant/Heiroglyphic) or which format(Qualifier-no timekeeping or Traditional-timekeeping), I'm hoping for the prior, but knowing Don Hood and the crew it will be an awesome race.

Hey All, Good news and bad news.
Good news is the Arizona Trail Riders have been awarded a slot on the AMA/FMF National Enduro Series. The date is Feb 8th, 2004. The course will be the trails in the MP11.5 area with your favorite trails, Shelf, Peak, Waterfall, included in the course. As an added bonus we are running some real fun stuff North of Castle Hot Springs road that we have not raced on in years. Mark your calendars and start training now.
The bad news is regarding an enduro on the Camp Wood trails. Seems with the increasing OHV use in the area a full blown NEPA environmental analysis will be required before an event is approved. The PNF is not against us, its just a sign of the times and nobody can hold an event there until the NEPA is approved.
OFR is committed to this one so we will be pursueing the NEPA. However these things take time (maybe 2 years) and money (a few grand) so it will be awhile. The time I have but the cash is another thing. Seriously though, if you or someone you know is interested in donating to the cause send me an email as I would love to talk with them.
Thanks,

Ok, the answer you have all been waiting for. And the enduro is................a timekeeper. Ouch, Ouch, Ouch.....just feeling all the daggers ;)
Yes, this means you get points for arriving early or late at the checkpoints. The reason? Well it was time to get back to the basic's, and our (ATR) roots for that matter. You all had 3 events worth of the Qualifier style to get used to that game and now you get to learn something else. How to keep time. ;)
Timekeeping is really not that hard, and you dont necessarily need an expensive computer to compete. Heck, I won my class in the 93 ATR enduro, 4-Stroke B, using nothing but a rollchart, odo, and wristwatch. My first ever enduro. If I can do it, I know all you other hungry trail hogs can. ;D
The entry form will be available soon on the Arizona Trail Riders website, www.arizonatrailriders.org, along with some very good enduro information I borowed from the Texas State Champioship Enduro Circuit. I would encourage everyone to read the doc as it really is quite good, expecially if you have not raced an enduro before.
I hope the format decision will not discourage anyone from competing in the event. Is it a little more work? Maybe, but you will be a more rounded enduro racer for your efforts.
As always let me know if there are questions.

Sorry Don, I had to remove the duplicate thread of this same topic. It's better to only have one thread on each individual race. I for one get more out of one specific thread, instead of multiples.
I also (obviously) moved this tread from the Desert/Offroad section. Should get a better responce here.

Timekeeping makes it a thinking rider's game in addition to the physical rider's game. A setup like a TrailTech computer and a roll chart make it a decent entry cost for the timekeeping format without the $$ to get an enduro computer. You need to study the format well to get it down or it all gets confusing. I'm looking forward to it!

Question, would anyone be interested in a enduro timekeeping class? Cover the hows and whys?

Those breakfast burritos you had out last time were the ultimate race fuel! I ate two before the event and although I finished lousy, it wasn't due to the food. I'm looking forward to seeing the food wagon out there again in February! Good stuff!
I also will be riding out in that general area doing some training rides for the upcoming season. Anyone interested in getting out, PM me.

I don't know about helping you go faster but I can help you out on bike prep so you can increase your chances on finishing the run. Ultra-heavy duty tubes from Michelin and weatherstrip cement from Checker Auto for the grips is a good start.:)

I am fairly a newbie at riding in Arizona and would like to get into racing enduros. Rather than start off with a National Enduro I was wondering if I could work it being a sweeper? Is this possible? How do I go about getting signed up to do this? I worked a checkpoint in 97 or 98 as a radio guy. I have lots of friends who race this enduro and would love to participate in one way or another.

I am working this as a sweep rider. I just emailed Don Hood off of the Arizona Trail Riders site and asked if I could. He put me on the list. That was last month so I don't know if he still needs sweep riders or not...

Hey, don't be afraid to run the enduro in the C class. The timekeeping thing is not too tough and many people don't even bother, they just ride for fun. Don is putting on a class for timekeeping that I'm attending and a decent timekeeping setup is had for under $100. (Trailtech computer and a roll chart holder). They also need help so maybe asking yourself this question will clear it up for you if you should run it or help out: "Will I be out there helping out and be mad that I didn't race this event?"
I'm doing some rides out there in the next few months so anyone interested is invited. PM me or shoot me an email.

What a good time! Except for the bottle neck on the C loop. I was sure glad to see the final check at the end of B loop [xx(].
How did everyone do?
I have no idea how I did. I figured since I stayed in the pits too long between the C and B loop, and showed up at check one of the B loop 17 minutes late, I was out of it. All though I did make up 10 minutes.

Boy-o-boy that was a tough one. If you Arizona guys ride those trails all the time, then I have to hand it to you. That 3rd loop was a bastard! It was great to watch those AA guys ride that stuff at speed.

Feb. 8, 2004
Pre-race
I don’t have a lot for my pre-race story since I spent most of the time at my house getting ready. The race was only 25 minutes from my house and this doesn’t happen that often, so I’m enjoying it. I did go out to the start on Saturday and sign-up and tech the bike in. This is my first time riding my KXF250 in an off-road race (besides Elsinore G.P.). I was really looking forward to seeing how it would work in some really tough conditions. I believe the race will have two pit stops and is about 100 miles long.
Race Day
I started on minute 23 with David Lyke, which I thought might be good. I was on an AA minutes row since I haven’t raced an Enduro in a couple of years, and was bumped back to an A rider level. I ended up signing up in the 4-stroke A class. Randy Hawkins was on the minute before me and then it was Mike Laferty two minutes before me. Then behind us were a lot of the top West coast racers (Russ, David, Nick, Ty, Steve, and so on). I was really looking forward to this race; because it’s not to often I get to race in my own back yard. On the first loop they ran us through the C loop, which was really fun and super dusty. This is where I started to realize it wasn’t that great of an idea to be on the same minute with a fast guy.J At one point on the first loop, we started to run late and I was lucky enough to get around David Lyke and make it on time. I believe David dropped a point on this section. After the first loop, I think there were 4 or 5 of us that didn’t drop any points. On the second loop, I knew it was going to get a little tighter. I rode pretty well and never made any mistakes, and only dropped three points after the first two big loops. At this point I was told I was tied with David Lyke and Nick Pearson, for the overall, going out on the last loop (which is the toughest). I really felt I was in a good position going out on the A loop, with me riding the 250f, because this is where it really works great. I was feeling really good and was following David, who was riding really well, and then I lost my front end off a little drop off. The bike went off the trail and I lost a good minute or two there trying to get going again. I was a little mad at myself, because it was something really easy that I wasn’t paying attention to. After I got going, I was riding really hard and was feeling pretty good. We were riding on some new sections that were really tough, while trying to go fast. I ended up stalling it on one of the sections that was on the side of a hill. This was the only downfall to the four stroke; trying to start it. It really didn’t take that long, but when you’re in a hurry it’s hard to just slowly kick through it and let it start. Once I got going again, everything was going good and I was doing everything I could not to keep losing more time. On one of the really rocky sections, I nailed my right brake pedal and foot peg on a rock. I was a little worried that I might have just ripped it off. When I put my foot back on the peg, I realized I had ripped part of my brake lever off and the other part was under my cases. At this point, I had no rear brakes and a lot of down hills to go. As you could imagine, I wasn’t real happy! I knew there was no way I had a shot at doing well from this point. I ended up trying my best not to do anything dumb and hurt myself, yet get to the finish as fast as I could. It was nice to see the finish and make it there in one piece. After the race I was pretty happy with the way I rode and the way the bike worked, but I felt like I had just lost a big race. I put a little extra pressure on myself since it was a local race and I wanted to win this thing pretty bad. The club (Arizona Trail Riders) did a great job on the race and this was one of the best Enduro courses I’ve ever raced (except for the dust). It was really tough and challenging the whole time. Anyone that finished the race should be proud.

What a great day! I finished 2nd in the senor B class.... 2nd to "LAST that is[B)]. Things started off very well for me. I'v never had a "dead engine" start before & was concerned about firing up my thumper in one kick. WOW!, 1st kick....it starts I pull the hole-shot off my line! Shortly after the 1st check point, I came upon a bottle neck. There were about 12-15 riders stopped at a corner. Other riders were coming up fast behind us, then went around us picking their way through. I then realize that there are faster riders in front of the pack killing time:(. I must have lost at least 5 mintues waiting, then I followed the other on through.
I had a good pace going on the first loop. I stopped at my truck to put on a cooler jersy, dry helmet, gloves, & googles. Had a snack & gatorade. I lost another 10 minutes or so, then back out for the second loop. Things were going good all the way up to check point 7. This is where I place the blame on my poor performance. As I pull up to the check point, the girls are dressed in "Hula" outfits[:X]. Now I'm totaly dis-tracked! ( at least that's my story & I'm sticking to it).
About half way through the 2nd loop I'm just running out of steam[xx(]. It's all I could do to just milk it back. I'm not sure on exact finish place, but I was 2nd to last of the finishers in the SR. B class. All & all this was a excelint event! Thanks to all who made this posible, and to all the helped out:D. I can't wait to do it again!

What a hard enduro. I was done a mile 25, but kept going and completed the C loop. It was cool camping with Todd, Ben, Dave, and John. Thanks guys. I will do it next year. My trip home was not fun. My drive shaft broke from my rearend and it broke my ring and pinon on my old 81 chevy. My wife (god bless her) came down to Carefree and I-17 and picked me up, and my truck was on a flatbed headed to a shop. But this gives me reason to get a new truck. Thanks to Don Hood for a Hard but good course.

Hey All,
Congratulations to all the "local" boys who came, saw and conquered. It was great to see all you guys asking questions and getting ready. The start line was a blur with all the riders so if I looked like I did'nt recognize you....well I didn't
Congrats to AP for leading the charge and showing everyone how its done out here in Az. Trace had a friend of mine (Mike Sigety) from RI on his minute and all I heard from Mike was "that guys is fast".
Also a big congratulations to Nick Nelson, Littlefox, for taking first place in the 200C class. This was Nicks first timekeeper an he came through with flying colors. Good job Nick :D
All of you who took a chance and entered your first timekeeping enduro really deserve a round of applause. Its not easy keeping a 24 mph pace and you all have my respect for trying.
Overall everything worked great and I'm confident we showed the AMA that a National Enduro belongs in Arizona every year. All of you from RA who jumped in and helped, I THANK YOU. I lost track of how many people we had helping but I know ATR could not have done it without you.
Now I'm just waiting to see all the pictures that were taken. Thats the one bad thing about being Director, you miss all the course action.

Phil, I'm sorry if the coconut bras and grass skirts threw you off your game ;). Seems a number of folks dropped some critical points between checks #7 and #8. Don was kinda wondering what we had done to you guys :D. I know we caught a few people off guard and they just looked at us, shook their head and laughed. Gotta do something to make the riders feel better. [:p]

LOL man i know the race was a couple weekends ago but wow i didnt finish again but oh well....the race was great and everyone did a wonderful job of laying out the coarse..the C loop wasnt to hard but wasnt to easy at the same time...there were some awsome up hill as well as down hills...but the bad thing was i was suppose to do the b loop to but after the C loop my clutch went out...but things happen so i had to put the bike on the trailer. But again it was a awsome lay out of the coarse and i dont think that they could have been a better coarse... Everyone did a great job and did there part at the race and helped out THANKS for that...
