Hello all you duners with kids. You may want to check out this thread regarding kids and safety certificates at the dunes:
http://www.americansandassociation.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12760
I was reading this last night, some posted that when they were checked for their passes, and bike registrations, they were also asked for proof that their children had completed an ASI safty training course.
I'm a family guy and love the fact that they are focusing on making the dunes a safer place. In my opinion, they are making it tougher for families that are not part of the lawlessness to enjoy the dunes. I wish all this money they are getting for enforcement would go towards stopping the rave parties at the hills, and cracking down littering, and crazies that speed through others camps at all hours of the day and night!!! Really, how many kids are causing problems riding around some cones in front of their families campsites?
Ok I'm done... hope this information is helpful.

Ok... I found some information on the Arizona Parks web site regarding training....hope this helps:
ATV Training
The ATV RiderCourse Developed by the ATV Safety Institute provides hands-on training in the basic techniques for riding an all-terrain vehicle. The course also covers protective gear, local laws, finding places to ride, and environmental concerns. If you bought your ATV after 1986, you may be eligible for free training. Those not eligible for the free training may take the course for a small fee. The ATV RiderCourse is available. To sign up call: 480-998-9888, or 623-877-5425.

As long as the kids are operating under the direct supervision of an adult who has taken the course they don't need to.

Greg, thanx fot your advise. By any chance do you have a listing of location here in Az. to take this course? Our members would be very appreciative.

Jack you just call the ATV Safety Institute. They have instructors here in PHX who give the class almost every month. When I took the class it was held out near WaterWorld way over on the west side of PHX.

I just called 1-800-887-2887 to see where the classes are for AZ. I was told they are in Apache Junction, however, they do not have any classes scheduled at the moment. They told me to call back in 2 to 3 weeks. I asked about my 6 year old and they told me if he had a new 50cc quad the class was free, otherwise it would be $75.00. If he borrowed a 50cc, or had a used one, I would still have to pay. Small problem....he rides a brand new 90 now....

I just signed up for the class today and they scheduled me for this saturday at 8:00am at speedworld!

Mrs. ksand and I took the training course this past Saturday along with my sister and brother in law. We should have enough "trained" adults around now to watch all of the kids at the dunes. We saw Stuart up there along with some other people who were getting trained for the same reason. The training was about what I expected. It would be great for new ATV riders...and I wish I had taken it when I first started. It was pretty basic for anyone who has been riding for any significant amount of time.
By the way...it seems like you not only get the course for free...but that you also get money back from the manufacturer ($50-$100) as long as you bought the quad new!!
Has anyone been down to the dunes in the last couple of weeks to confirm if they ARE, in fact, checking for these training certificates??

My dune buddies are on the ASA board, and yes, I was told tonight that the Imperial county Sheriff was ticketing kids riding in camp areas. They will be watching for unsupervised kids under 16 to ticket, so keep those kids off the quads in camp areas or face the consequences. Just finished repacking bearings on the left side of my Warrior, so that is why my post is so late! I read that if you don't repack annually, your weekend in the dunes could be cut short!

Thanks, SFG, for starting this thread. I've learned more about dune rules since joining this site than I ever knew before - more than I really wanted to know. Between kids rules, safety training certificates, db levels, safety stickers, registration papers (vee must zee yoah papuss pleez) and out of state tags my head is spinning. Not to mention the tripling of fees and the rumored "no tolerance" policy. "Officer, did you have to shoot my husband? He wasn't trying to run you over after the sound level check." "Lady, those piped quads are lethal weapons, besides he was within 21 feet." I understand that CA law shools are opening up a new currilum in Dune Law. Seriously, it has gotten a bit more complex, but it helps to understand the reqirements and find all the questions and answers in one place.

Nate,
I'm Scheduled for the 22nd also. I lost two wheels since I bought my quad in 1999, so I'll be on a friends Scrambler 400 and a Red Chevy Pick up.
They told you they don't cover Polaris quads? I swear I hear a new story after every call. This whole thing is a bit fishy if you ask me. Oh well, rules and rules so I will comply. See ya there on the 22nd.

Thanks Nate, I really appreciate that. I told the guy up front that I know longer own the Banshee I registered with and he "confirmed" that it wouldn't (shouldn't) matter.
I just dug out the safety certificate Polaris gave my boy after their training course. I wonder if the rangers will accept that. I know it isn't "ATV Institute" but it is a training certificate none the less. Oh well, better safe than sorry... I'll see ya on the 22nd, unless we hook up for a dune ride befor that.

It is interesting to see how different States handle this. Utah has a similar requirement for kids on quads. They must take a safety course. When I called up there to find out if it is required of out of state visitors, they said no. It looks like we fall under California's jurisdiction!
Looks like I need to purchase a 90cc quad for my 15 year old (almost as big as I am) to be able to take the safety course (300ex is too big and powerful for him [}:)])

OK, we want to go to the dunes on the 7th, 8th and 9th of November and there are no available Safety classes open between now and then. I called and all classes are full and there are none scheduled for November (I'm on a waiting list). What do I do? Do I risk it and plead with the LEO that I have every intention of taking the safety course or do I cancel my trip and wait until I take the class?:(:(

Mark, I'm in the same boat. My class isn't until November 22nd. I'm just not going to let my boy ride around camp. I'll take him on longer rides through the dunes more often, and make sure not to stop and hang out at Comp. From what I've read, people that are getting checked or ticketed on this are camp riders when the rangers come by to check for passes. Anyway, that is my plan. I hope they are understanding.

Thanks SFG. I know that there are many more in the same situation. It will be interesting to see how this season is affected by the enforcement.

Since I have a daughter that is 11, I am in the same boat. Unfortunately, she rides a Honda 250ex. I called them up and for her to go through the 4 hour course, she must have a 90 or under. I have decided that both my wife and I will take the course to get the certificate since our daughter is always with us. When I called, I found out that since her bike was boughten new in 2002, we will get a $50 rebate for taking the course. You need to give them the Vin # of your bike and they will tell you if you'll eligible. Also, since most of the courses were too far in the future, you can ask for a family course. This means you must have 3 people come. They don't have to be from your family. You will get a quicker date. Since I live near Prescott, they told me that there were possibly some courses coming in Dec. But the guy told me about the family course and got me going the first part of Nov. on a Saturday in Cottonwood.

Kim,
It was a pretty basic course. It is an excellent course for beginners. I will be sending my kids to this course.
