View Full Version : Whats that in the road ahead?
I know some of you will say it happens all the time but the first time a big ol Elk cow runs in front of you at night, it makes an impression. This past weekend was the first for me. I've seen one or two in the woods along side the road during the day, but my wife and I were on our way to Heber Fri night and just as we got to the top of that big hill one ran across the road. It wasnt close enough that I had to slam on the brakes but close enough that I had to slow down. Now I'm thinking 'are there more?'
This was almost as good as seeing the wild turkey fly over the road about a month earlier up by Show Low (another first for me). I've heard they cant fly and I agree, that was a sorry excuse for flying.

I have seen lots of elk from the highway from Payson to Heber. The whole idea is to see them at a distance and not planted on the front of your hood. Night driving thru this area requires you to be very cautious.
Wild turkeys can fly just fine. However, they don't soar like osprey or eagles.
Turkeys roost in trees at night for safety, but spend most of the day on the ground searching for food. When threatened they can escape by running or flying away.

A friend of mine who lives in Flag launched her Expedition across the highway to dodge an Elk. She was headed up the 17 from Phoenix at about 10pm. She saw one run across the road, she swerved left to avoid it and hit the median.
In the process, she hit a berm and flew into the opposite side of the highway and crashed into a ditch. The truck was totalled but she walked away without a scratch, thankfully.
