The 207 is the Desert Wells Multi Use Area and is what is left open of thousands of acres of land south of Apache Junction. Take Highway 60 towards florence, Mile marker 207 is on the right side. You can get a map from game and fish 602-942-3000 or AZ State Land Department 602-542-4631. Just please, have a permit and DO NOT RIDE NEXT TO THE HIGHWAY! Stay 1/4 mile away from the highways. Have fun!

Uh...guys...Desert Wells has signs on the trails so you ride ON the trails. Making jumps, creating motocross areas and riding anywhere but trails(ie CROSS COUNTRY TRAVEL) is not permitted on state land or public lands (unless designated as an "open area"). You have to stay on the trails otherwise the area will get closed. What you guys are talking about here are SAME REASONS 201 got closed. If you go anywhere except the designated routes, you are wrong.
If you want to make a track, jumps or have a kiddy play area, you need to apply for a permit from the state land department and specify what it is that you plan to do. Call em up and ask em! If you want jumps, put them on a piece of private land where you know the owner. Don't have friends with private land, go to ET and ask them to make an FMX area. Sorry for the ranting.

201 was closed because of the idiots that rode right next to the 60 - disobeying the pinal county ordinance that says no dust over 12 inches high within 1/4 mile of highways and building. I saw the same think going on next to Ironwood by the track this Saturday - the EPA rulings about dust are never changed unless you can prove that you can control it. And - it is possible to build jumps on the trails orrrr - maybe we can build some kickers!
Solutions not problems.
One Rant deserves another! [8D]

VP - Your point about jumps ON the trail is a good step forward. Ponder this - If people see you digging a hole and making jump on a trail, will they know that you are encouraging people to "stay on trails"? What happens when billybob drives his truck on that trail at night?
Natural terrain jumps seem like the safest avenue if you gotta have jumps. Would you call those "kickers"? They are out there, you just have to find them.
I think it would be a first to get a permit to make some jumps. The state might get a little nervous thinking that if they allow it, they'll be liable. You may be a good rider, but not everyone is. You are not alone in your desire for fun, open, free($relatively) riding. It couldn't hurt to ask state lands about it.
This brings up the age old arguement....What is an appropriate use of public/state lands? What activities should be done on private lands where the impacts are the sole responsibilty of the land owner? OHV use is always on that list. Scientific studies don't support OHV use very often it would seem. It would be nice if we could fund some research.
BTW - The Fox group is determining what is appropriate and I'm not sure that we're at the table. (the Fox group is a high powered group of lawyers, environmentalists, ranchers and developers trying to change the AZ constitution for land use, development and preservation.

Jumps are really not that important to me. Truth is, if my son was younger I would buy 40 acres in Florence and build him everything he wants - since he is 15 he will be gone and on to something new before I have time to. Im glad he was able to enjoy the 201 for the short time he did. Now he rides trails with us and is looking at riding the track a lot more. We are very fortunate to still have available what we do, unfortunately i think it will mostly be gone in the next 10 years, and apparently there is absolutely nothing we can do about it unless we buy all the land ourselves.
Now - about talking to the Land department - I encourage you not to - last time I did they took away what little place my son could go from our house - they knew nothing about this little area until I asked so we could be legal - now - it is all fenced and posted and although others have cut the fence I cannot allow my son to go there. What point they are trying to make I dont know....
Also - even on private land, it is my understanding that you still have to abide by what the EPA says about dust and all.
What goes around comes around.

VP on private land, you do not have to abide by the EPA's dust law's. my buddie has 10 acre's out in Surprise that we have built quite the nice track on and we stir up more dust than i think the BAJA 500 guys do...we have gotten talken to but, they cant really do anything..

WOW.. CHECK IT OUT, Now I think the 207 area is closed too.
is that correct?
Pima and Dynamite has some cool jumps, and killer whoops. That place will be closed down soon too. The houses are creeping really close. Look out for those bitter mountain bikers while you are out there.
