Hey!,
How about adding the following option
o That big one over there
Don't know about others, but, I don't have a clue as to which
hill is which. I just figure if it is big, then it probably has a name.

Rob,

Hey Tim, I don't think "boring" really applies to China Wall. We love to take first timers there to show them just how steep and tall the dunes can get. Without fail, their answer to "let's go" is "you first".

China Wall tall and steep? NAH, you need to go to the Cinders to see TALL & STEEP. :)
Going to a hill and riding up it is no problem, as long as you keep going. I have been with some groups whose riding consists of duning to the "hill" and sitting there most of the day watching people repeatedly "race" up the hill only to bragg that they were never beaten, which was only because they refused to race anyone they knew was faster. ;) It doesn't take much riding skill to run straight up a hill. But the more people who hill race, or go to the drags, leave more dunes for the REAL riders to play in.[:p]

I'm with Tim on this one... We just stop by to watch for 10-15 minutes & get back to "dunin" :D sometimes on the CR I have to blast a couple people & then back to dunin again - Just not into the Up & down thing I guess..... Ripping thru bowls & cruz'in drop offs -- that's where it's at.... Not who takes off before the others & say's " I'm faster....;)
Speaking of duning --:)

I go to China wall but usually only stay about 30 minutes going up and down it a few times. Half the fun is getting there without a GPS - just riding the bowls and heading in that direction from Pad 1 on Gecko Rd.
I did some searching on the subject of dunes and the steepness of them. According to some scientific data, if the sand is fine, the steepest the dune could be would be 37 degrees. They said most steep dunes are in the low 30 degrees. Some are just longer than others. Anybody an expert in this area?

Hmm i must be different. I go to Olds... will be there for 2 hours and run the hill 60 - 80 times. out of those (on my bike) i lose 55-70. Do just for fun.
However on Dave's banshee.... racing against similarly equiped bikes i rarely lost. Ran the hill 15 times and lost 5.
Or his YFZ 450.... [u]NO 4 strokes beat me.</u> Raptors DS650bajax Predator and Cannondale moto. However if the hill was longer or i didn;t get the hole shot i probly would have lost to the ds or raptors.
HEH HE HE HE helps when you drag race on the strip alot.

No doubt the Cinders are steeper. I don't even like going down the hills at the Cinders. It's very hard to side-by-side race at the Cinders. In fact I don't think I've ever seen it.
But the Cinders aren't sand dunes. We like to dune to a hill...race a couple times...then dune to another hill. It's kind of like connect-the-dots.

china wall of course, but there is another hill if you are looking at china wall then go to your left for a little bit this hill was so steep the sand was sluffing off on the top 50 feet. I don't know maybe this hill is china wall. All i know is we had a list of gps coordinates and the gps took us to one hill but the other one we found was bigger, Idon't get ride in glamis enough.

smoke and kimhuggs1,
this is a cool little website and one of the only times during the year I really get the kids paying attention. They love it for some reason. I believe the China Wall hill you all talk about is a reverse dune, a dune that just keeps growing on top of itself because of continually reversing wind patterns instead of moving across the landscape like most sand dunes do. The web page talks about them.
If anybody has some gps coordinates that would be about 5-10 years old that I could compare to some recent ones I would appreciate it. I would like to do a lab on how far the dunes are moving. If you think about it in time a living dune will move far enough the coordinates would not be any good for that hill.
thanks

Matt,
That's a great point. These dunes are constantly moving. During a good windy week, they will look nothing, like the previous weekend. Most of the larges "more common" hills are still in the same place but i think topography would dictates that. (meaning certian valleys are going to keep air movement in that vally. If air movements are constantly changing directions it would have a "nill" effect) Patton Valley is a prime examble That formation has been there for 10+ years according to the oldtimers. It's shapes has changed from time-to-time, but ultimately it's still in the same spot.

Thats right jwalk and patton is very dangerous right now as well as freeway hill they both formed big drop offs at the top as you go up you want to be aware of you surroundings in case you need to turn and bail the tops peak and drop off the other side fast!!!Ugly i tell you ugly !!! And alls i can say about (no skill required to run the hill)
Thats what slow people say[8D]

I have been doing some more looking into this idea of moving dunes. The dunes we are talking about do not "move" the simply shift back and forth because the wind patterns change on a regular basis. This is why there are the nasty dropoffs at the top of the hills early in the season. As the riding season progresses the bikes knock down the top of the hill. If the wind patterns rarely changed, like on an ocean, the dunes would "move". These are called living dunes. From what I understand some of the dunes on the Oregon coast line are living. I am really hoping to make the trip on the 7,8,9th, but may be deer hunting with the father in law.
Thanks

I get motion sickness so Hill shooting is what it is all about for me. We camp by China wall, and drive to the wall, lizard slide, olds, comp hill. Stay at each for about 2hrs. move to the next and so on. Dramamine doesn't help.

Glamis Comp is my favorite, not too whoopy and just the right length. Olds is way too long for my liking. Id like to hit China Wall but dont know how to get to it, is it pretty much SE of olds? How will i know when i get to it?
Olds is my favorite. We haven't made it to China Wall yet but want to check it out. There's a short but very steep climb behind Olds. Don't know what it is but it's fun too.

there is a hill a good ways south of China wall in the closed area, not trying to get people to go there, was looking for china wall, no GPS, went way past, never noticed any markers saying closed, just ended up there, but it is steeper, just as tall and the sand isnt packed and I probably could never find it again, on the way back we ran into China wall and well the other hill was a lot more fun

I dont intentionally ride closed areas, dont want to give the greenies any more ammo, we passed the markers indicating we were in a closed area on the way out, but I swear me and my buddy never saw the markers when we entered the closed area and were just following tracks and directions from random people we came across looking for China Wall, made for a great ride though and man is the sand ever soft out there

Could be hill 5....not sure if it's in the closed area. i always thought it was way steeper than the wall....scary with a rail
China Wall for me but I've had a lot of good times at Buttercup comp hill too. My favorite was a steep hill way in the Mexico Dunes we called "Colina Grande":

There's a hill we call hill 4 that is not in the closed area but sounds like where you're talking about. There's usually just a few other people there when we go out there.
