Default Hi from Chandler Looking for bike inputs
Live in chandler and really wanting to get back into some "trail riding" via duel sport since I do not have a truck. Dont want a 650 I have road bike with lots of power. Looking for a light agile well balanced bike.

I am 5"8 and 175lbs dont like to tall of a bike

I have not ridden in the dirt in years and at this point not concerned about growing out of a smaller bike.

Interesting bike in my mind are the WR250R fuel injected - been looking for a cheep used one but they seem to be rare. I am tired of tearing down all my carbs on my street bikes.

I am new to the area and also do not know what options I have to tool around close to chandler just to practice vs day trips. I know the bike needs to be decent enough to get me to the trails which rules out an XT250 or Honda's CRF230L which I think look to be exactly the size and type of bike I want to ride.

Comments suggestions?

Ron

im a big fan old the old school thumpers for DS.

i say KTM 620 LC4. you want something that can rock the trails and also run 65 indefinately.

xr 600/650 are good DS as well.

we are similar in height/weight.

I just got a Suzuki DRZ400 that I made street legal. It's a good bike but the seat is very high. I had the suspension lowered a tad, and put on a gel seat. Electric start is great on a dirt bike too.

I've got an 08 klx 450 that I bought as street legal. It's great although I'm a complete newb in the dirt.

You don't want a WR250R. If anything you want a WR250F. The "F" model is the dirt oriented model and in AZ is easy to street legalize. It has the dirtbike profile, travel, suspension, and ground clearance. The "R" model will require some serious mods to make even moderatley dirt worthy. First its geared to run street in the high mph range. you will have to do a big re-gear to tackle even moderate climbs. The suspension is also to plush for moderate dirt and the ground clearance is much less. You will also have to change the stock tires immediatley to have any fun. Its too much of a cost investment. Even then it will handle like a street bike in the dirt. The "R" model is like those huge BMW duals, 90% road and 10% fireroad. everything else is unattainable. Your best bet is to get the F, throw a $15 baja designs rear brake light switch on and a $9 tusk mirror and then you have enough to get a MC plate. I know because I did it. The F model will easily cruise on the roads at 55-60mph all day. And worst case if you needed more slab time, a simple change to the front sprocket +1 tooth and your in the 60-70mph range. The other downside is there are thousands of aftermarket produsct and accessories for the F model, because it is designed for dirt. The R model has very little. Good luck
