Default BITD Racing
What type of quad shuold i get, i want to start doing desert racing with BITD. was going to do it on my 400ex but it decided to walk off with out me on this weekend. i was thinking the ds 450 mx, ltr 450, or the ktm 525 xc.

We are racing the outlaw 525 IRS (ktm motor) and are having good luck with it. Personally, I would go with the honda 700xx You cant beat the IRS in desert racing. You still have to sink the cash into the suspension, but still, you would have to do that with any bike.

Our outlaw is great but less money would need to be spent on the 700xx to make it raceable.

How does the IRS feel while riding regular or racing, always been a little hesitant about it.

Get a Honda 450 it is your best bet for BITD. It is fast reliable and doesn't cost that much to make race ready, and all of the parts are race proven. Look at what bike has the majority at the races and it is the Honda 450. As far as the 700xx it is a good bike but they don't make it any more and it cost more to make it competitive than the 450.

The 450 is a great quad and runs very well. IT depends on what you are trying to do in racing. If you are thinking about Iron man a sportsman class, then you will do fine. If you want to be competitive in a expert or pro class. You will need to be willing to put down some serious cash. There are still a lot of the 700xx available for a good price and are an excellent quad to race. Short of 4 new shocks it is race ready. (fuel system etc not counted) As far as the IRS setup in racing and trails, its great. I didnt think I would like it, but I have duned it and it runs really well, no problems at all. And with the racing in the desert, its top shelf.

I don't understand your logic you can get front and rear shocks, arms and rear linkage a tank, pipe and skid plates. For a 700 you need 4 new shocks, 4 a-arm CVS in the back, pipe, tank and special wheels in the back. As far as any thing else unless you are getting the bike and parts for free don't even waste your time. If you already had a 400 EX all of the tires and wheels interchange so you don't have to get those. Look at the results most of them are Honda's there is a reason everybody chooses to run them.

Greg Stuart had a pretty indestructible 650 honda when he retired.. Maybe you could pick that up? ( just a thought).. Often wonder where old racers go..

I believe it depends on what class your going to start out in. Most race places make you run sportsmans for 3 races then place you in c class and you have to work your way up from there. Just get a machine that fits you physically and fits your skill level and just run it stock or with a bigger fuel tank and go from there.

I prefer the Big Bore in the desert , less stess on the Internal componets IMO, but depends on the level of racing you are doing , but if you do go 450 go Honda , most spare parts available even in the pits from other teams if needed

I've done both the IRS and straight axles. I'm back on the IRS if that tells you anything. If you want to do a lot of BITD, the best way is big bore. I started racing GP's on a bone stock Polaris Outlaw 500. I started in the B class and won my first race. So depending on your skill level, just about anything will work to start.

The faster you go, the more things break and the more money you have to invest in your vehicle regardless of brand/size. Even custom chromoly extra thick Honda 450 frames get beat up. Max just overalled the Cinders race on a Honda 700.

I was going to do it on my 400ex, because I have seen vids of them racing but it got stolen over easter weekend. So i am just looking around trying to figure what would be best. I don't want to get all into racing just yet, have to focus on school but i need to do something to forget about school everyonce in awhile. The IRS looked smooth in the vids. I need something i can go trail riding with friends then go race when ever. Thanks for all the opinions, there is a lot to choose from.

When you're done with school, start focusing on racing. When you step up to the BITD level, you have to be all in. Its not just a "Show up and race good to go" type series.

It takes a lot of time, planning, pit support and of course money. I suggest running local GP's to get your feet wet.
